A consortium from Germany, Italy and Austria has tested recycled building waste for its suitability as an economical and environment friendly surface for parking areas. The Green Concrete project investigated the material’s physical, chemical and construction properties, including its load bearing capacity, stability, permeability and suitability for sustaining plants.

The product was named gravel turf and its base layer comprised recycled materials or natural gravel in combination with soil or compost planted with an assortment of grass and herb seeds. Gravel turf is permeable to water and allows evaporation to take place, thereby improving the microclimate and quality of life in urban areas. It can also help preserve natural soil functions, including the buffering of harmful substances. The use of gravel turf encourages the recycling of construction materials rather than paying to deposit them in landfills. In addition its use can help limit the threat of flood damage by enabling precipitation to enter the ground water, which reduces the amount of surface runoff entering the sewerage system. Gravel turf is an improvement on the conventional practice of sealing the surface of parking areas with asphalt or concrete. Additional benefits include a high biodiversity, reflecting an increase in the number of plant and animal species, and the interlinking of habitats allowing greater freedom of movement for species. Green Concrete enabled small business partners to increase their knowledge of gravel turf and produce suitable materials for its construction. The initiative also helped companies to actively market the new product, which is good for both business and the environment.
