Getting the most out of the web on mobiles

Technologies for providing rich multimedia content significantly improve the quality of everyday life. EU-funded scientists worked on ways to help end users of portable devices enjoy multimedia services with enhanced service experience.

Mobile devices are generally limited in resources: memory, network bandwidth and, in particular, processing power. Other obstacles such as limited graphic capabilities and audio rendering are also narrowing the choice of audiovisual applications. Improving delivery of multimedia content to these devices was the aim of the EU-funded project 'Efficient location-aware audio-visual delivery of high-quality content to mobile devices' (AVID-MODE). Rigorous project research achieved significant progress in audio and video signal processing, including hardware and middleware issues for mobile devices. As such, a novel audio coding scheme enabled scientists to deliver immersive audio experience and robust sound capturing. A remote listening device helped analyse acoustic echo cancellation and noise reduction to better capture audio in a noisy environment. Furthermore, scientists made significant enhancements in room and car equalisation for optimal audio playback experience. Through the mobile device GPS, AVID-MODE improved location-aware audio services to ultimately provide customised multimedia content presented in an interactive way. Other improvements include interference cancellation in devices that combine different standards such as GPS, GSM, DVB-T/H or Wi-Fi. Work was also geared towards optimising the H.264 baseline decoder and testing the new one, H.265. AVID-MODE designed a unified platform for digital TV and multimedia playback that operates on different media platforms, including mobile devices. In addition, it improved remote control communication of these devices. Another project achievement was the design of a novel hand-gesture recognition method, thus optimising the performance of limited-complexity devices. Integration of all control and display capabilities of modern boats on portable devices concluded project tasks. Project outcomes are meeting the ever-increased need for achieving a greater level of integration regarding mobile device services. High-quality video, sound and TV improve the user experience, while users can also interact with the multimedia content.
