Turning structural biology research into regional benefit
As traditional structural biology research moves towards new challenges, a major goal has become a systemic view of life. NMR spectroscopy is an essential analytical tool for this type of cutting-edge research. However, until now, such technology and its associated research infrastructures have yet to be fully exploited in Europe. NMR and associated technologies are an integral part of such research, and their importance has recently been reflected in the ESFRI Roadmap’s INSTRUCT Integrated Structural Biology Infrastructure. the EU-funded EPISODE project set out to rectify this situation. Its overall goal was to maximise the economic benefit of structural biology research infrastructures in the regions of Tuscany (Italy), Berlin-Brandenburg (Germany) and beyond. EPISODE aimed to share resources, encourage cooperation and improve collaboration among regional authorities, research institutions and industry. By identifying the bottlenecks currently hampering the interactions among these groups and removing them, the project planned to turn research into revenue. A thorough analysis of the current capabilities and requirements relevant to authorities, academia and industry was carried out to strengthen the links between these key actors. EPISODE also focused on fostering transnational and inter-regional cooperation, and encouraging new collaborations. As a result of EPISODE, a joint action plan was developed that outlines strategies for further regional growth. It also details the steps needed to increase economic competitiveness through research and technological development activities (RTD). The action plan was accompanied by a business plan in which the funding sources necessary to implement it were identified. Outcomes from the completed EPISODE project have the potential to be extremely successful and high-impact. Enhanced economic development in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries, both within and outside these regions, will lead to greater collaboration, further investments and more European jobs.
