Technology transfer and best practice seminar targets statisticians

The European Commission (Eurostat and the Institute for Systems, Informatics and Safety of the Joint Research Centre, Ispra) is organising the Exchange of Technology and Know-how Conference in Prague between 13 and 15 October 1999.
National statistical institutes (NSIs) do not have the funds or the expertise available to carry out all the developments that they would like within the timeframe imposed by changing legislation and users' demands. Consequently they are forced to find more efficient ways to meet their requirements. This can be achieved either by in-house changes and developments or by importing human expertise and results from previous statistical research.
A co-ordinated approach with a European dimension is often more cost effective than isolated national incentives.
ETK'99 aims to provide a forum at which key actors in official statistics can discuss:
- Results of past efforts and research, their relevance and their transferability;
- Methods for efficient and effective technology transfer;
- Strategies for future actions.
This seminar on the transfer of know-how and best practice with regard to new tools and methods in statistics is directed at those who produce statistics and those who use statistics as inputs in their normal production process. Unlike traditional scientific seminars, ETK'99 will be largely organised as a series of demonstrations of new tools and methods for the production and processing of statistics.
It will targets two main groups:
- Organisations that have technological know-how and good practices to share, and are willing to share them:
- Organisations that have technological needs and wish to benefit from the experiences and achievements of others.
