The 'eGovernment label' will be awarded to 60 online administration services at the conference 'eGovernment: from policy to practice', jointly organised by the European Commission and Belgian Presidency, to be held in Brussels on 29 and 30 November.

The selected services have been chosen by a team of independent experts from 282 proposals submitted by EU Member States, EFTA (European free trade area) countries, EU candidate countries and non European countries such as Brazil, Canada and the USA. The 60 services, 45 of which will be on display at the conference, were selected using criteria such as the quality of their interactivity with their users, accessibility and availability, impact of the service and transferability of the service.

'Transparent and interactive administrations bring citizens closer to government. The time has come to move on from ideas to practice,' said Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society. 'Once we have genuine interactivity, a major reform of the public services will become possible. Government will become more efficient. Old and expensive ways of delivering services will be replaced by more carefully designed and targeted services offering major cost savings and increased efficiency.'

Mr Liikanen will participate in the conference, along with Luc Van den Bossche and Rik Daems, the Belgian ministers responsible for public administration and telecommunications respectively.

By awarding the eGovernment label, the Commission and the Belgian Presidency are aiming to demonstrate the best current practices and their practical advantages, thus encouraging their development to form a part of the eEurope action plan adopted in June 2000.For further information on the conference, please consult the following web address:
