"Stockholm IT Week" will take place from 26 to 30 May 1997. Following the first "IT in Sweden" conference, held in Spring 1996, Stockholm is now intending to expand the event to the international arena. The "Stockholm IT Week" will, therefore, in addition to the "IT in Sweden '97" national conference, also be hosting the "Global Access" international conference and exhibition aimed at an international audience.

"Global Access" will address a wide range of current issues in the field of IT, including: the renewal of public services; information supply and the electronic infrastructure; telecommunications; city nets; Internet/Intranet; and the new working environment.

The conference will also officially launch the "Global Bangemann Challenge" which expands on the European "Bangemann Challenge", formally concluded in January 1997. Under the "Global Bangemann Challenge" Europe is now challenging the USA, Japan and the rest of the world to find the most efficient uses of IT in specific key areas. The primary purpose of the Challenge is to promote the exchange of experience and provide a forum for the comparison of projects at an international level.

The "Global Access" exhibition will focus on the Internet, multimedia and communications and will be open to the general public. All cities and project participating in the "Bangemann Challenge" will be offered space at the exhibition. It is expected that it will attract some 4,000 to 6,000 visitors from Sweden and abroad.

The "Global Access" conference and exhibition are being organized by ANCARA (Advanced Network Cities and Regions Association), an international group of cities and regions, including Smart Valley and Orlando (USA), Osaka (Japan), Singapore, Eindhoven (The Netherlands) and Stockholm. One of ANCARA's prime objectives is to provide a permanent forum for the exchange of services and technologies in order to facilitate the planning, development and implementation of IT projects worldwide.
