A seminar on "Controllability of nutrient losses from land to sea - Experiences from the Baltic Sea drainage area" will be held in Ispra, Italy, on 18 September 1997. The seminar, which is part of the Joint Research Centre's "Blue Seminars" on aquatic processes and water technology, will be led by Prof. Anders Grimvall of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

In the mid 1980s, a goal of a 50% reduction in the nitrogen and phosphorus export to the Baltic Sea was adopted by HELCOM (Helsinki Commission) and action programmes were initiated to achieve this goal by 1995. Now that data for the first half of the 1990s are becoming available, it is obvious that the reduction goals have not been achieved. The seminar will examine the data available and possible reasons for the lack of progress.

The Blue Seminar series serves as an open forum for discussion on the management of water resources in Europe. The seminars will also contribute to the work of the task force on water technologies, established by the Commission.
