SUPERVISING OF FOOD DURING EUROPEAN-WIDE COOL TRANSPORT

Objective

Food producers must guarantee the quality of their products over the whole "chain" of manufacture-transportation-customer. This guarantee is important within Total Quality Management (TQM) systems and because of continuous product liability. The technological solutions currently available for the supervision of food during cool transport do not satisfy such high and increasing demands. The project will transfer multi-functional sensor technology in PCMCIA-format from the building industry sector to the food transport industry by means of a new multi-sensor arrangement based on microelectronics. The transfered and adapted technology will monitor food products during their transportation. Technology from German regions will be initially transfered to Italian and French regions. The technical objectives for achieving this innovative transfer are:1) Choice of relevant and important product groups (e.g. meat, milk, cheese,.....)2) Testing and choice of sensors for low temperatures, smell, gas, moisture and further parameters. Available sensors include a newly developed 3 channel gas sensor chip for smell measurement.3) Adaptation of the existing sensor technologies for the special food, packaging and transport conditions (eg train, lorries)4) The testing and validation of the new systemThe business objectives have been identified as:A) A measuring system for the supervision of food during cool transport which is practicable, affordable, valid and in demandB) Securing of patents and licences, IPR policy and strategyC) Joint-venture, investmentD) Effective dissemination throughout the EUThe module system will revolutionalise the supervision of food during cool transport reducing costs and increasing quality. The need from transport companies and their customers (eg large supermarket chains) will ensure an industrial demand offering a healthy Return On Investment. The module system could also become a technological and market leader through its transfer to other industrial sectors.Food producers and transporters will be integrated into the implementation phase of the project to ensure the success of the prototype product.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
