Project description
Growing the best berries ever
Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are considered the crème de la crème of the EU’s berry industry, which has significant economic impacts and potential. What is more, their genetic resources and pre-breeding material can be used for the creation of new breeding possibilities. The EU-funded BreedingValue project will investigate and provide the knowledge and tools to proceed with this endeavour. Specifically, the project will identify conserved and maintained germplasm of the main genera appropriate for sustainable berry production throughout the EU. Moreover, it will apply the latest genotyping and phenotyping tools for the characterisation of local varieties. Goals also include the application of life cycle analyses to evaluate the ecological benefits and communicate the results to breeders, health authorities and regulatory and legislative authorities.
