Competence Centre for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - 4CH (Competence Centre for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2022-07-01 al 2023-12-31

The 4CH project aims at designing a European Competence Centre for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage, based on digital technologies. The pillars to achieve this objective are an advanced use of 3D modelling, the integration of data from scientific conservation analyses and a state-of-the-art organization of the knowledge about heritage assets. They will be integrated in the project’s Knowledge Base, a system facilitating access to relevant information, and provided as services on the 4CH cloud. In this way the project will address important societal issues as the valorisation and preservation of heritage, put at risk by hazards deriving from human actions (or lacks thereof) and environmental factors including climate change.
Another important action consists in the attention paid to human resources working in heritage management and conservation, with training services to upskill them and to facilitate the digital transformation of the sector.
The project has spent the first part of its planned work to collect and organize information about previous research in related domains and to analyse the best way to establish the European Competence Centre, including its organization, governance and funding resources. Moreover it has set up the main tools of its platform, including the project cloud, and has outlined the plan for the services it will provide.
As already mentioned, the expected results of the project consist in the design of the European Competence Centre and in the provision of the necessary services for its operations. These include the provision of digital tools on the project cloud and the organization of knowledge in the knowledge base, accessible for consultation by heritage researchers and professionals. Such services also include training and education for professionals and advice to support heritage institutions. It is anticipated that the Competence Centre will improve the preservation of heritage and mitigate the adverse impact of natural disasters and climate change effects, as well as the degradation of heritage assets due to time and negligence. Heritage is universally recognised as an important component of identity for European communities and, on the other hand, a substantial economic resource: 4CH will contribute to its preservation for the present and the future generations.
