“GREEN HYSLAND – Deployment of a H2 Ecosystem on the Island of Mallorca”

Periodic Reporting for period 4 - GREEN HYSLAND (“GREEN HYSLAND – Deployment of a H2 Ecosystem on the Island of Mallorca”)

Berichtszeitraum: 2024-01-01 bis 2024-12-31

The GREEN HYSLAND PROJECT addresses the requirements of the call FCH-03-2-2020: H2 Islands by deploying a fully integrated and functioning H2 ecosystem in the island of Mallorca, Spain. The project brings together all core elements of the H2 value chain i.e. production, distribution infrastructure and end-use of green hydrogen across mobility, heat and power. The overall approach of GREEN HYSLAND is based on the integration of different deployment sites in the island of Mallorca, including 2,5MW of electrolysis capacity connected to local PV plants and FCH end-user applications, namely buses and cars, 2 CHP applications at commercial buildings, electricity supply at the port and injection of H2 into the local gas grid through a Guarantee of Origin System.
The scalability and EU replicability of this integrated H2 ecosystem will be showcased via a long-term roadmap towards 2050, together with full replication studies that includes the development of a complete hydrogen economy in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands. The intention is to expand the impact beyond the technology demonstrations delivered by the project, setting the basis for the first H2 hub at scale in Sothern Europe. This will provide Europe with a blueprint for decarbonization of island economies, and an operational example of the contribution of H2 towards the energy transition and the 2050 net zero targets. The project has already been declared to be a Strategic Project by the Balearic Regional Government and has support from the National Government through IDAE.
During the fourth year (2024), the activities developed by the project partners have been mainly focused on continuing efforts to deploy the necessary components of the project and comply with the operational terms of the Grant Agreement and dealing with the unexpected situations occurred during the year 2023.
Particularly efforts have been concentrated on resolve the safety issues detected globally with the electrolyser manufacturer to proceed with the implementation and commissioning of the green H2 production. In May 2024, Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) in the H2 Pilot Plant began and were successfully completed in July 2024. The plant was also registered on the "Guarantees of Origin" platform in August 2024. By September, the plant resumed operations to finalize the testing phase, successfully producing hydrogen molecules. Also, H2 pipeline and injection point was authorized in June and the commissioning process started in July 2024, and the first hydrogen injection into the grid occurred in early September, followed by the inauguration of the H2 pipeline and the blending station.
In relation to the Port of Palma Fuel Cell, H2 mobile storage units have been shipped to the Port of Palma and are being stored until commissioning. The Hydrogen Filling Panel has been programmed according to requirements, but final adjustments with the Fuel Cell supplier are needed. The Fuel Cell tender at the Port of Palma was awarded in November 2024 and design and detailing are in progress.
Regarding the Palma Hotel Fuel Cell, FAT tests of the stack were carried out at the end of July, the main stack equipment for the Fuel Cell was received in November. Commissioning authorization from the Palma City Council is still in progress.
Regarding the transversal activities in WP5, progress has been made in data collection, background research and scenario production. Some Task has significantly advanced with the completion and analysis of the tourist and local surveys data collection. A paper on tourist perspectives on green hydrogen in Mallorca has been accepted for publication in Energy Research & Social Science and a second paper is underway. Also, the entire Green Hysland project, from production to end-users, has been modelled in PERSEE and is now ready for simulations, optimization, and evaluations. Additionally, preliminary H2 demand profiles for 2025 have been developed, but they still require validation from Green Hysland partners.
In WP6, throughout 2024 participants has focused on analyzing scenarios to scale up green hydrogen and meet demand from 2030 to 2050. Simultaneously, efforts have aimed to enhance the Replication Tool, this work has involved the continued development of the Hydrogen Territories Platform (HTP) and significant progress has been achieved in drafting and researching the roadmap in the Balearic Island by 2050.
Finally, about WP7, regular online promotion and activities, steadily growing the subscriber base for the newsletter and enhancing dissemination outreach. A workshop in Cyprus with the REMARKABLE project from June 25th to 27th, 2024, where Green Hysland was showcased and additionally, the Horizon Results Booster Exploitation service was successfully completed. Also, the 7th newsletter was disseminated on the 22nd of July 2024 and the 8th newsletter was shared on the 10th of December 2024.
GreenHysland project expect to develop a fully functioning green hydrogen ecosystem, covering the whole value chain not only from the infrastructure's development point of view but also through the development of a tool to ensure the traceability of the hydrogen produced and consumed. The challenge includes dealing with diverse topics such as management of the GDOs, regulation and permitting, etc. according to the specific conditions of the isolated territories.
This project is dedicating great efforts to be replicable in other isolated territories. Within the project it is foreseen that the follower territories, which are: Madeira (PT), Tenerife (ES), Aran (IE), Greek Islands and Ameland (NL) and Chiloé (Chile) and replicate the GREEN HYSLAND project model in their territories. The tools developed within the project are expected to be useful for other territories interested on replicating the project model in their territories, especially if those are isolated.
