Periodic Reporting for period 3 - PITHIA-NRF (Plasmasphere Ionosphere Thermosphere Integrated Research Environment and Access services: a Network of Research Facilities)
Periodo di rendicontazione: 2024-04-01 al 2025-06-30
While we understand the broad features that specify the behavior of this region in space, we lack the depth of understanding of the complex variability that would allow us to build models with real predictive power.
Through this integration, PITHIA-NRF now provides:
• Operational access to a mature e-Science Centre
• FAIR and standardized datasets and higher-level products
• Integrated workflows combining data and models
Furthermore, linking best-in-class R&D facilities, PITHIA-NRF provides seamless multi-technology services for the development of new observing technologies, procedures and tools for the end-to-end transition of research models to applications tuned to meet the requirements of the technologies concerned.
More specifically:
- the e-Science Centre has evolved from a proof of concept to a fully operational platform, supporting: ontology-based and keyword search; workflow execution and integration of multiple datasets; user authentication and resource management; simplified registration through a graphical wizard. Integration with cloud infrastructure (EGI DataHub) enables storage and execution capabilities. The platform currently hosts 71 data collections, 6 workflows and 17 static datasets, demonstrating its maturity and community uptake.
- the coherent operation of the PITHIA-NRF nodes has been fully established and optimized, with 8 Transnational Access (TNA) calls implemented, large number (more than 50) of successfully completed user projects, improved evaluation and access procedures ensuring faster and more efficient access.
- the dissemination, communication and outreach activities include publication of more than 60 research papers, publication of content for the general public in the project web site, continuous newsletters and stakeholder engagement, strong presence in international conferences and outreach events.
- three Innovation Days and two-high-Level Meetings were successfully organised, strengthening collaboration with industry, SMEs, and space agencies. Standardisation processes and pathways were fully developed for innovation uptake. Stakeholder feedback was systematically collected to guide future services.
- a comprehensive sustainability roadmap has been developed, accompanied by the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among partners. The overall sustainability strategy is based on a model of distributed responsibility across the participating institutions. In parallel, follow-up proposals have been prepared to ensure the long-term continuation of the initiative.
• deployment of interoperable workflows
• standardised metadata and ontology
• seamless access to distributed data and models
Based on these achievements, PITHIA-NRF has become the European hub facilitating coordinated observations, data processing tools, modelling advances, and the standardisation of software and data products. It also supports the transition of models to operations by providing e-science tools to reach required accuracy and standards. Several innovation projects already benefit from these services. More specifically, the following outcomes are expected:
Networking Activities:
• verification and implementation of EOSC-aligned data management standards
• optimisation of observing strategies across nodes
• fully established innovation platform
• completed sustainability planning
Trans-national Access Activities:
• coherent node operation and standardised user access
• extensive exploitation of observations with users to explore new physical processes in the ionosphere–thermosphere–plasmasphere system, advancing beyond the state of the art
• continuous user support through new methodologies and tools for prediction models and their transition to operations
Joint Research Activities:
• access to validated data and model results via higher-level data products
• development of advanced integration tools and computational workflows for new products
PITHIA-NRF delivers substantial impact by transforming how the European and international community accesses, uses, and benefits from upper atmosphere research infrastructures, enabling new forms of collaboration, knowledge generation, and societal benefit.
Scientific and Community Impact
PITHIA-NRF enhances scientific effectiveness by enabling seamless access to distributed infrastructures, fostering a more inclusive and collaborative environment. Researchers across disciplines and regions can more easily engage with advanced facilities, promoting cross-disciplinary exchange.
The project strengthens community coherence by aligning practices, encouraging standardisation, and enabling continuous stakeholder interaction, creating a more integrated and responsive ecosystem for space weather and upper atmosphere research.
Impact on Research Capacity and Human Capital
A key legacy is capacity building and skills development. Through structured training and hands-on engagement, the project supports a new generation of scientists and engineers.
It also broadens participation by engaging users from underrepresented countries and sectors, contributing to a more balanced European Research Area and enhancing long-term sustainability.
Societal Impact
By improving understanding of upper atmosphere processes, PITHIA-NRF contributes to the reliability of critical technologies such as communication, navigation, and space-based systems.
It also supports risk awareness and preparedness for space weather, contributing to infrastructure protection and societal resilience.
Innovation and Economic Impact
PITHIA-NRF strengthens links between research and innovation by enabling interaction between academic and non-academic stakeholders. Engagement with industry, SMEs, and public organisations supports the translation of research into applications.
This stimulates new services and innovation in space weather, data services, and analytics, enhancing the competitiveness of the European space sector.
Policy and Strategic Impact
The project supports European priorities by promoting open science, interoperability, and infrastructure integration, aligned with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).
It also enables evidence-informed policy and decision-making, supporting long-term planning and investment at national and European levels.
Long-Term Impact and Sustainability
PITHIA-NRF establishes conditions for lasting impact through a clear sustainability vision and continued collaboration. It lays the foundation for a persistent European capability in upper atmosphere research.
Its sustainability approach—based on shared commitment and distributed responsibility—ensures continuity, scalability, and adaptability, positioning it as a long-term asset for European science, innovation, and society.
