Sustainable production of Cellulose-based products and additives to be used in SMEs and rural areas

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - CELISE (Sustainable production of Cellulose-based products and additives to be used in SMEs and rural areas)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2021-10-01 al 2023-09-30

Rural areas and small and medium enterprises need to be considered in nowadays in order to reduce inequalities and increase the social progress. In this sense, CELISE is an international project for helping the SMEs and rural areas within the bioeconomy. The main objective of CELISE is to study the sustainable production of cellulose-based products and additives using biomass residues processing in these areas.
CELISE is based on research stays (secondments) from one institution to another one and all objectives are covered by the stays. The consortium consists of 14 partners from 9 countries: 11 parents from academy and research institutions from Europe and Latin America, and 3 from SMEs. CELISE has 77 short stays along with the world, involving 42 participants. At the moment, 5 secondments have been carried out, involving some of the main objectives in relation to the characterisation of the raw materials (mainly residues from cocoa, coffee and soy), and the processing and products from these waste materials (pre-treatment and fermentation). In addition, the community characterisation towards empathy map and a preliminary design of educational programmes have been carried out during the stays.
In order to fulfil the sustainability, CELISE considers all social, environmental, and economic points of view. Regarding the social aspects, by studying rural and/or vulnerable areas, adding portable pieces of equipment, and educational programmes. The environmental issues by means of the use of natural additives and biomass residues as raw materials, the removal of chemicals reactants, and increasing the use of bioenergy. And, in relation to the economic issues, CELISE studies everyday products in the construction and health sectors, artisan economies, and uses engineering and mathematical tools to optimise the business models, considering all points of view (communities, associations, companies and so on).
