Reinforcing the AI4EU Platform by Advancing Earth Observation Intelligence, Innovation and Adoption

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - AI4Copernicus (Reinforcing the AI4EU Platform by Advancing Earth Observation Intelligence, Innovation and Adoption)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2021-01-01 al 2022-06-30

AI4Copernicus aims to reinforce the European AI on-demand Platform (AIoD) within the Copernicus ecosystem in order to develop useful, on-demand Earth-observation artificial intelligence solutions to a number of technological, economic/business, and societal challenges and domains. The overarching objective of the project is therefore to make the European AI-on-demand platform, the platform of choice for users of Copernicus data along the value chain (scientists, SMEs, non-tech sector). Via technological integration and a series of open calls, the project enables innovative use-cases and small-scale experiments, with the aim to increase the uptake of both AIoD and Copernicus data and services, while at the same time push the capacity for AI-driven innovation across multiple business and social domains.
During the first reporting period, AI4Copernicus has made progress on a number of directions, in line with the work plan. A data management plan as well as technical requirements have been specified. Technical integration has produced a stable environment for winning projects to work on, as well as it has formed the basis for future work within the context of the AIoD platform. A number of internal bootstrapping services and tools have been customized and made available, which empower users of the AI4Copernicus platform to innovate by making use of AI in their own domains. All four submission rounds of the Open Calls have been successfully organised, covering a breadth of project types and application domains. Exploitation and sustainability are a priority and are being constantly monitored in line with progress made in other ICT-49 projects as well as with the AIoD platform.
By the end of the project, AI4Copernicus aims to deliver
• Several audited services and tools of high impact, as a result of the work done by the awarded projects
• Improved and better integrated versions of the internal bootstrapping services and tools
• Several actions as part of our alignment and coordination work with all ICT-49 projects. In particular the transparent streamlining of workflow processing from core AIoD services, namely AI4Experiments (based on Eclipse Graphene/Acumos), onto CREODIAS is expected to provide a basis for integrating other Cloud and Edge computing environments to core AIoD services, therefore making both the AIoD and the Copernicus environments more accessible and impactful.
