reinforcing SustainablE Actions, resilience, cooperation and harmonisation across and by the SEA-EU Alliance

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - reSEArch-EU (reinforcing SustainablE Actions, resilience, cooperation and harmonisation across and by the SEA-EU Alliance)

Berichtszeitraum: 2022-07-01 bis 2023-12-31

The reSEArch-EU project addressed the need to strengthen research and innovation (R&I) infrastructure, collaboration, and alignment within the expanding European University of the Seas (SEA-EU) Alliance. A robust SEA-EU research ecosystem directly benefited researchers and general society by promoting sustainable development, addressing environmental challenges, fostering economic growth, developing innovative tools, and developing solutions for coastal communities.
Overall Objectives:
• Integrate, harmonize, and leverage resources and expertise across the SEA-EU Alliance.
• Develop a resilient, antifragile, and innovative pan-European research environment.
• Align research with industry needs, promoting knowledge transfer and solutions-driven outcomes.
• Engage stakeholders in collaborative research design and knowledge dissemination.
• Establish a common Open Science and Open Research Data Policy to promote transparency and accessibility.
• Develop a multi/inter/transdisciplinary research agenda focused on sustainability, addressing key societal and environmental concerns.

The reSEArch-EU project sought to create the European University of the Seas Research Area, building upon the existing SEA-EU governance framework (established through Erasmus+ funding). Key strategies included:
• Strengthening governance, communication, and project monitoring systems.
• Fostering academia-business partnerships and integrating best practices in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) management.
• Developing tools like the Virtual Technology Office, SEA-INNOVATE HUB, and Marketplace Tool to boost innovation and entrepreneurial capacity.
• Implementing guidelines for transdisciplinary research, stakeholder engagement, and citizen science initiatives.
• Establishing an Open Science policy (SEA-EU ORD), data management tools, and training frameworks.
In the last thirty-six months, reSEArch-EU has contributed to the creation of a joint knowledge base. The reSEArch-EU project was managed within the SEA-EU's Erasmus+ project governance framework. The included project's framework enabled us to efficiently strengthen existing governance structures, define roles and duties, and assure timely and high-quality fulfillment of deliverables, milestones, and activities outlined. Furthermore, this technique enhanced communication and information exchange between partners while also establishing a reliable monitoring system for project control throughout completion.

The reSEArch-EU project boosted university development through business news and science-practice partnerships, integrating partners' IPR policies and best practices. The Virtual Technology Office, SEA-INNOVATE HUB, and Marketplace Tool were created to strengthen young researchers' entrepreneurial mindsets.

The SEA-EU Alliance developed a practical guide for transdisciplinarity and stakeholder engagement in citizen science through awareness-raising, pilot activities, best practices implementation, and lessons learned analysis.
The SEA-EU alliance has developed tools and frameworks to create an Open Science strategy, conduct training and educational activities. The SEA-EU Open Research Data Policy (ORD) covers national, regional, and university data management and sharing policies. Toolkit guidelines and Open Research Data Systems serve as centralized platforms for data uploading.

The SEA-EU aimed to become a leading academic force in Europe by addressing societal sustainability in ecosystems. The project aimed to establish research programs and a long-term research agenda among six partners. The research plan integrates antifragility principles, sustainability of R&I practices, and Open Science. Dissemination initiatives use the SEA-EU E+ project's visual identity and communication plan, engaging stakeholders through various channels and international conferences.
Over 36 months, the reSEArch-EU project made significant advancements:
• Collaborative Research Plan: Nine founding partners developed a joint research plan addressing societal and environmental challenges, emphasizing co-creation, entrepreneurship, and community-engaged research.
• Resilience and Innovation: Adoption of tools (like AFTT), digital transformation processes, and remote work infrastructure significantly enhanced the resilience of partner institutions.
• Open Data Systems: The SEA-EU Open Research Data Policy and supporting data systems promoted data sharing, accessibility, and alignment with national/regional policies.
• Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: Application of the HEInnovate methodology strengthened IPR management, collaborations, and knowledge exchange, leading to greater capacity to address complex challenges.
• Transdisciplinary Impact: Transdisciplinary approaches in peripheral marine regions, incorporating stakeholder input and regional specialization, catalysed innovation.
• Internalization efforts, including collaborations with non-European institutions and CAU's UNESCO Chair for Integrated Marine Sciences, enabled knowledge sharing and broadened the project's impact.

Some examples of reSEArch-EU international events participation:

1. SEA EU Congress took place in Algarve “Strong Partnership to Face Global Challenges and achieve Sustainable Development Goals” in January 2024. The project results were shown to representatives of more than 40 institutions from 4 continents.
2. EUROMARINE Summer School
3. II International Meeting on Knowledge and the Blue Economy that was held in Cadiz in December 2022. In this event participated more than 250 national and international speakers; almost 90 professionals and more than 570 researchers; more than 200 companies involved, and more than 30 institutions. In total there were around 2,000 participants who attended the bilateral meetings, round tables and other activities organized at the congress.
