Periodic Reporting for period 1 - NEST (An interoperable multidomain CBRN system)

NEST is designed to help in the early detection and continuous monitoring of CBRN threats in real time, and provide complementary information (location of threats, temperature, humidity, time, operators involved, etc.) useful for auditing or investigation purposes. These functionalities will be achieved by using an IoT platform capable of acquiring, processing, and merging data from internal and third-party services. Artificial intelligence will be applied to support decision process for securing facilities and for generating automatic alerts. Furthermore, augmented reality will be used to display threats and hazards in a manner that minimise distraction and cognitive failures. NEST will be validated in three different scenarios within the transport and commercial sectors. These scenarios include a diverse range of sites that draw large crowds of people. NEST will share information with the command centres of a stadium, a transport system, and a hotel to assess the risk situation.
On the other hand, regarding the general system communication, we defined that the model used between the general system (master) and the different sensors (slaves) has been defined and a master-slave communication was the selected one. The communication protocol used will be the I2C. The memory configuration of the elements has been defined, as well. The wireless communication, by using LoRaWAN, has been also developed; and the first proves has been carried out.
The development of IoT platform for the management of NEST Sensors, NEST central communication HUB and Lora WAN gateways has been achieved. It provides graphical user interface for easy use as a complement of COP module. The platform provides APIs and communication channels for real time data flow. At the highest level of the hierarchy, the development of COP and AR software has achieved an operative version of NEST situational awareness software and it has been successfully connected with the developed NEST Sensors and Communication HUB through the IoT infrastructure. Furthermore, the integration with augmented reality developments has also been carried out.
The main building blocks of NEST system and initial integration has been achieved. The team now will undertake (during second reporting period) extensive integration and testing to deliver a robust system supporting the pilot phase starting on M22.
Most ethical requirements have been considered. Mainly focused on compliance with ethical procedures for the involvement of human participants in NEST research activities in accordance with European guidelines and procedures. Additionally, both the procedures to safeguard the right to data protection, such as the analysis of potential risks (environmental, misuse of research results and associated mitigation measures); such as the analysis of any other ethical issue and the evaluation of the adoption of good ethical research practices by the members of the consortium carried out by the ethics advisor.
At standardization during the reporting period, the team has analysed related standards applicable to the scope of the project as well as potential contributions and collaborations. As result, the team has envisioned de development of a CWA (CEN/CENELEC Workshop Agreement) focussed on the openness of the communication HUB and IoT platform for the seamless connectivity of third party CRBN sensors.
Technical partners developing sensors will be focused on their integration as a compact system. The low-cost sensors will be implemented in a unique system, what it would represent an interesting proposal for different security environments, covering a lot of different scenarios and easy to be improved due to its modular structure. This will involve an important impact in the security field, because for first time a fully European CBRN low-cost system will be available. The achievement of the feasibility of our proposal will a step forward beyond the state-of-the-art of the CBRN system.
The consortium has achieved the first version of the IoT platform combining a (i) communication HUB based on LoraWAN, physical and logical connectors and defined protocol that allows multiple CRBN sensors to be operative into the NEST ICT infrastructure. (ii) Real time bidirectional communication through cloud infrastructure with high level applications providing full interoperability using industry communication standards. (iii) Security and user management systems have been implemented allowing the transmission of hazard data and threat only to authorised personnel and ICT systems (as NEST COP). Combined with an initial version of the COP with significant focus on the HMI innovative features is ready. It efficiently supports collaboration among participants in incident management, provides decision support and collaborative communication and information sharing tools.
Moreover, during next reporting period, to prove the final feasibility of the system a real test will be carried on in the three scenarios depicted in the project proposal: a football stadium, a hotel and a train. So, a test system will be manufactured to be able to be used it in on-site exercises.
