In science we trust - scientists sound the alarm and show how to save the Earth!

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SOSNIGHT (In science we trust - scientists sound the alarm and show how to save the Earth!)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2021-06-01 al 2022-03-31

Within SOSNIGHT project our researchers sound the alarm and will demonstrate how science and scientists can save the planet. We want to show that although the Earth's climatic situation is very difficult, science offers hope to save it. This slogan "in science we trust" will be the main motto throughout the entire event. Its objective is to make public at large, and especially young people look at science as a source of strength, opportunities and hope for the future. During the event we will show how each field of science (technical, humanities, natural sciences, health sciences) can be a source of hope for saving the planet. The subject matter of the program will point to the importance of the European Green Deal for Europe and its citizens. See how to live in an eco-friendly manner every day, see what an ideal city of the future should look like, take a look at the plants that feed the world, learn to care for the ecosystem, find out how knowledge about trees can save lives, learn about environmentally friendly technologies. You will find that scientists are ordinary people and their work is truly fascinating. And all this thanks to science presented in a completely playful way (edutainment).
The SOSNIGHT project is a continuation of projects from the last fourteen years, nevertheless presenting a lot of new things. Basing on the positive response from public during Researchers’ Night in 2020 we want to include in this year’s programme in addition to stationary events also online events, which sparked great interest in 2020. A significant advantage of the project will be its flexibility. We are able to modify the program and the way of organizing its events in response to changing situation in the world. Topics of individual Partners have been selected so that they are in keeping with the overall message of the project. We want to show that the work of scientists brings hope for the planet, and it is a lesson that is worth learning from them.
WP 1 : AWERNESS CAMPAIGN
Pre-events:
“Lato z helem” – online popular science lectures;
“Smart Summer Cump” – online workshops for children;
“Fizyka warta poznania” – online seminar;
“Smart Cump”- learning through play - remote workshops for children.
Pre-event: Film workshops for project participants
The workshops helped to develop the skills of creating educational films. Participants had the opportunity to create their own movie, discuss its advantages and possible mistakes during creation. The participants learned how to write the script, discussed the rules of creating statements. 30 participants took part in the online training organized on the Zoom platform on June 15-17, 2021. The workshop was organized by the Poznan University of Technology.
During the workshop, the following topics were discussed:
film treatments used,
content of the scenario and examples of recording methods,
useful rules for creating statements for an educational film,
use of screen recording, condensed sequence, film quotes, etc.,
work in a sample free assembly program,
simple animation treatments in an educational film.
Pre-event: Lectures promoting science
In September, the University of Life Sciences in Poznan organized a series of lectures popularizing science. The topics of the lectures were very diverse, from plants in glass to global warming. The lectures were conducted by recognized scientists employed at the University of Life Sciences in Poznan, specialists in their field. The lectures enjoyed great popularity among the general public. 16 lectures were organized.
Pre-event: Workshops organized by Institute of Molecular Physics Polish Academy of Sciences
WP 2: ACTIVITIES DURING THE NIGHT
The event took place at 24th of September 2021 and due to the coronavirus pandemic online only. The heart of all activities was "Telewizja Nocy Naukowców -- Researcher’s Night Television", the central element of which will be the Researchers' Night Studio, broadcasting live what will happen on 8 thematic live channels of our Partners. The Researchers 'Night Day started at 4:00 PM The LIVE program was available for the participants, and for those who, for various reasons, could not participate in the event, a VOD program was created, which can be freely played and viewed during the Researchers' Night and after it.
Researchers’ Night Gala
The ceremonial gala of the 15th anniversary of the Researchers' Night, which took place on 24th of September 2021 and became an opportunity to honor those who are engaging and by supporting its organization, they have become the true stars of the Scientists' Night.

Despite our concerns about the perception of changed format of the Researchers’ Night, the event was perceived in very positive light. The overall score given by respondents was the only a bit lower that in 2020, but exceeded the values from pre-pandemic years. The recommendations expressed most often were related with the format – with most respondents opting for on-site format next year. Similarly to previous years, a group pf respondents wished for more events, longer timeframe of the Researchers’ Night and more hands-on experiments.
