CLIMED-FRUIT : Adaptation to climate change and mitigation for perennial crops in Mediterranean Area

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - CLIMED-FRUIT (CLIMED-FRUIT : Adaptation to climate change and mitigation for perennial crops in Mediterranean Area)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2022-10-01 al 2024-03-31

Grapevine, olive, avocado, cherries and lemons are among perennial crops in the Mediterranean area currently facing climate change. Farmers are changing or adapting their practices accordingly, but some of these practices do not achieve border crossing or are stuck in a specific agricultural sector. CLIMED-FRUIT aims to share knowledge ready for practice, collected from different Operational Groups (OG) across Europe, for a better adaptation to climate change and mitigation, in perennial crops in the Mediterranean Area (grape vine, olive, fruits). The project builds on the results of a core group of 9 OGs and is implemented by a multi-actor consortium (advisors, farmer organisations, research and education institutes, standardisation organisation). CLIMED-FRUIT will scale up local solutions up to the EU-level, raising awareness on innovative practices and methods and encouraging cross-fertilization between perennial crops. To sum up, this project is build on european available knowledge to improve access to relevant practical solutions and foster co-design, co-implement and co-evaluation in the process of building resilience to climate change.
The CLIMED-FRUIT project has started with the definition of 4 methods to guide the implementation of the project: (i) for selecting material to be disseminated, (ii) for selecting materials from operational groups (OG) outside the consortium through an open contest, (iii) for organizing and holding a crowd-writing contest, and (iv) for conducting digital cross visits). In addition, 1 common format for extended practice abstract to report OGs objectives, stage of implementation, main expectation and achieved results, 1 guideline for conducting a simplified cost/benefit assessment of practical solutions, and 1 data management plan have also been developed.

Applying these methods and guidelines, partners have listed existing OGs and other EU initiatives and projects that are testing and implementing farming practices to face climate change in the Mediterranean Area. Including the 9 OGs from the consortium, 184 OGs and initiatives have been identified in Europe. To present and disseminate the practices developed in the 9 OGs from the core group, each responsible of OG has organised a digital cross visit and produced an Extended Practice Abstract. Among the 22 practices of the OG core group presented in the digital cross visits, 10 have been selected by partners. Their cost/benefit assessment is ongoing.

6 months after the beginning of the project, the consortium has organised two major events. First, an open contest targeting other OGs, projects and initiatives that have worked on innovative solutions for adaptation of perennial crops in Mediterranean Area to climate change. 36 participants responded to the contest. Following the open contest, a web conference has been organised in March to pitch their practice in a two-days event, gathering about 1000 people. After the web conference, 12 participants have been selected to produce an Extended Practice Abstract and a digital story. Second, the consortium has organised a crow-writing contest targeting solution providers (e.g. products, equipment, processes, services) to select and share additional practices. 12 participants were registered and 9 were selected. They have provided an Extended Practice Abstract as well as a short video.

A year after the beginning of the project, the consortium has started to summarize the information collected. Meetings have been held to train partners and winners of the open contest in producing digital stories and they have produced story boards. In addition, Extended Practice Abstracts with cost/benefit assessment are being prepared and 27 practice abstracts have already been produced.

To ensure a broad dissemination and communication, following main achievements have been performed: creation of visual identity including a logo and charter, creation of a website (translated in 7 languages), creation and update of social media, writing of a communication and dissemination strategy plan, and planning of the strategy for translation. 3 newsletters have been released since the beginning and partners participated in events.

Finally, technical coordination has ensured progression of the project. 3 consortium meeting hosted by partners have been organized (kick-off meeting, and 2 general assembly), as well as 5 steering committees to keep track of ongoing and upcoming activities and potential adjustments needed. Bi-annual internal reporting has been implemented to report on financial expenses, and management and coordination tools were developed (SharePoint, reporting templates, etc.). Materialized risks have been handled promptly with proper mitigation measures to ensure viability of the project and risk management plan has been updated.
First 6 months have mainly set the baseline for the CLIMED-FRUIT project and have defined the methods and framework for the rest of the project. Among its results, the method for conducting digital cross visits can be widely shared to allow other stakeholders in evaluating their practices or practices they would like to implement.

Existing OGs, projects, and initiatives acting in the field of perennial crops in the Mediterranean Area were identified supporting the contacts to reach for following contest (open contest) and dissemination. 9 digital cross visits are broadcasted in the project website and on YouTube. The list of knowledge and best practices gathered and will be further disseminated in the second half of the project

Two contests were organized and allow to gather additional practices and solutions and reach multiple stakeholders. A cost/benefit assessment template has been drafted and is being conducted for core group OGs and for the open contest winners.

Based on data and information collected in the first half of the project, many materials will be prepared and disseminated in the second project period. Templates and meetings have been held to prepare following steps, especially on how to produce digital stories and on the creation of the 5 sub-topic reviews. Partners have started to draft story board for the digital stories.

Communication and dissemination strategy plan have been development in the early steps of the project allowing to reach 285 followers on the LinkedIn account, 76 on Facebook, 90 on YouTube, and 35 on X. Over 700 visits were registered on the website since the launch of the google analytics account in July 2023, 3931 registrations were recorded and 1924 participants assisted to the web-conference, 2813 views were registered on YouTube for the web-conference, and 129 persons are subscribing to the newsletter.

Finally, the online platform to share documents is up and running. Project and technical coordination add value for the achievement of each technical work package’s goal and work.
