The main goal of the SMARTDROPS project was to develop original Smart Complex Emulsions (SCEs) and explore their multifaceted potential in various fields. This project encompasses a strong knowledge transfer between the host institution and the researcher, with the aim of advancing the researcher's independent career and fostering interdisciplinary training.
SMARTDROPS focused on three specific applications of SCEs: (i) SCEs containing multifunctional liquid crystals were utilized to create dynamically controlled lensing devices, opening new possibilities for high-resolution micro-lenses and optical technologies. (ii) the project aimed to leverage SCEs' ability to form complex nanostructures for the development of high-performance organic electronics devices. The liquid crystal organization within SCEs facilitated improved charge transport, leading to advancements in organic photovoltaics (OPV) and organic field-effect transistors (OFET). (iii) SCEs-based sensors will be integrated into organs-on-chips, enabling continuous monitoring of cell activity without the need for complex equipment. These sensors hold promise for inexpensive chemical sensors with remarkable sensitivity and versatility. The target materials and their properties in SMARTDROPS were highly relevant to both existing and emerging technologies, such as high-resolution micro-lenses, high-performance OPV/OFET devices, and versatile chemical sensors. The project aimed to contribute to the scientific community's knowledge in the preparation of advanced functional materials.
By aligning with the MSCA strategy, the SMARTDROPS project seeked to enhance Europe's competitiveness and growth through multidisciplinary research. It offered a valuable opportunity for the researcher to receive interdisciplinary training, mentorship from leading experts, and develop a new research line that has not been explored at the hosting institution. The anticipated outcomes of SMARTDROPS may contribute to the advancement of innovative technologies in the future.
