Career Development Plan
(öffnet in neuem Fenster)
Through delivery of StrucRadiation and with help from the host lab and institution, I will refine my project management skills, and gain insight into further development I may need in future academic endeavors. I will seek support and advice on project implementation and financial management of StrucRadiation from the Research Services and Career Development department at UNIVIE. I will take the opportunity to attend training events offered by the host institution, including “Development of externally funded project”, “Project Management” and “ERC project proposal writing”.During the course of StrucRadiation, I will deliver regular oral presentations on my work and scientific areas of research pertinent to StrucRadiation. I will present at lab meetings, journal clubs, departmental seminars and international conferences, and will take advantage of the vibrant network of leading centers in evolutionary biology across Vienna, EvolVienna (http://www.evolvienna.at), which will improve my networking skills and provide me with a wider forum in which to develop my communication skills. I will take advantage of the courses the host institution offers, such as “Teaching in higher education” and “Public Engagement”, and I will liaise with the Communication Department at UNIVIE to receive assistance with communication tools such as writing press releases. I will contribute to the teaching program of Prof. Paun at UNIVIE, with a guest lecture each year on structural variation and adaptive radiation, and I will contribute to practical courses dealing with on RNA-seq and structural variation. Finally, I will gain mentorship experience co-supervising undergraduate and graduate students in the group, especially those working with comparative genomics. Importantly, I will co-supervise together with Prof. Paun a PhD student (Teerna Khastgir, start of PhD Oct 2021) that works on population genomic analyses in New Caledonian Diospyros.
Communication, Dissemination & Outreach Plan

Over the course of StrucRadiation, I will disseminate results at a variety of conferences to obtain feedback, increase the visibility of the research, and connect with other groups internationally to share expertise. I will give oral presentations at generalist audience conferences including ESEB and SMBE, and I will target more specialist conferences such as the International Congress on Transposable Elements. I will use Twitter during conferences (where appropriate) to increase my visibility and that of my research by using conference hashtags. Outside of conferences, I will post regular updates about StrucRadiation on Twitter and other platforms such as ResearchGate. Alongside conferences, I will disseminate results of StrucRadiation among the scientific community in Vienna by organising symposia in IBC and EvolVienna, inviting local speakers for constructive feedback on the project and helping to foster closer collaborative links across local departments. I will develop accessible material incorporating elements of StrucRadiation in the wider scope of issues in the public interest, such as the climate crisis, and participate in forums such as „BE OPEN – Science and Society Festival‟, Pint of Science Austria annual science festival, and European Researcher‟s Night, Lange Nacht der Forschung. I will use channels such as Twitter posts and press releases to raise awareness of my participation in these events, seeking out help from the Corporate Communications Unit at UNIVIE to do so.
