INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES FOR CONTAINERSHIP FIRES PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - OVERHEAT (INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES FOR CONTAINERSHIP FIRES PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2024-01-01 al 2025-06-30

The main objective of the OVERHEAT project is: “prevent, detect, manage, response and recovery from fire accidents on board of containerships”. The OVERHEAT project aims to redefine fire prevention and management on container ships through innovative methodologies and technologies. By developing a Digital Solution (DS), This DS gathers data different solutions that will be investigated within the OVERHEAT project. The project will investigate the use of IoT sensors (fixed and mobile) and the use of UAVs equipped with advanced imaging capabilities further enhance visibility under challenging conditions, such as fog or smoke. In rescue scenarios, the DS functions as a digital assistant, sharing real-time situational data with stakeholders, including rescue teams and port authorities, ensuring synchronized decision-making. OVERHEAT also focuses on fostering a robust safety culture. By analyzing the causes of container ship fires and conducting risk assessments, the project identifies and mitigates hazards. Through iterative safety evaluations, best practices for firefighting and fire prevention are developed. The DS integrates with IMO-compliant e-navigation systems and vessel IT architectures, enabling augmented situational awareness. The project’s outcomes will be validated through simulations and real-world demonstrations, offering a comprehensive, cutting-edge solution for safer maritime operations.
Work performed and main achievements are coming from WP2, WP3 and WP4 which are high of interest for preparation of the DS development and integration on board.
Integrated system as a whole. The DS solution will be integrated both on board the ship and within the port.

Integration of IoT Sensors and UAS into a holistic approach system, for the continuous early fire threats’ detection, high confidence level recognition and classification of threats, for informed decision-making support and suggestion for action, as well as response to incidents support. By default and since such implementations are not usually met, the system is considered to be beyond the current state of the art providing for the safety never existed before.

All the information are contained within the dedicated deliverables.
