SoBigData RI Preparatory Phase Project

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SoBigData RI PPP (SoBigData RI Preparatory Phase Project)

Berichtszeitraum: 2022-10-01 bis 2023-09-30

SoBigData RI, with its tools and services, empowers researchers and innovators through a platform for the design and execution of large-scale data science and social mining experiments. It is open to users with diverse backgrounds, accessible on the cloud (aligned with EOSC guidelines), and exploits supercomputing facilities. SoBigData RI renders social mining experiments more efficiently designed, adjusted, and repeatable by non-data scientists' domain experts by pushing the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable) and FACT (Fair, Accountable, Confidential, and Transparent) principles. SoBigData RI will orient resources from multiple perspectives: e-infrastructures and online services developers; big data analytics and AI; complex systems focussed on modeling social phenomena; ELSEC (Ethical, Legal, SocioEconomic, and Cultural) aspects of data protection; privacy-preserving techniques. SoBigData RI PPP is driving our RI forward from the simple awareness of ethical and legal challenges in social mining to the development of concrete tools that operationalize ethics with value-sensitive design, incorporating values and norms for privacy protection, fairness, transparency, and pluralism.
SoBigData RI is designed to execute large-scale data science and social mining experiments. The main results obtained in the first reporting period, from 01 October 2022 to 30 September 2023, can be summarised as follows: (i) final selection of the legal status and plan for ERIC statute definition; (ii) interaction with beneficiaries to establish the different nodes, including the definition of the roadmap for enlarging the local networks, and contact ESFRI delegates and ministries; (iii) preliminary study of the service that can be provided by the different nodes, including business aspects related to service development and maintenance (iv) defined preliminary aspects for business model definition.
This project implements the preparation phase expected by ESFRI RoadMap. The impact of a sustainable RI is related to the application of significant and innovative research on social mining and AI. The RI's main scientific and technological achievements are designing and implementing specific research areas that address and cover interdisciplinary studies. The SoBigData RI is working to deliver results with significant immediate or potential impact: 1) networking activities through conferences, workshops, datathons, summer schools, and training activities. 2) transnational and virtual access: through fellowship programs and virtual portal access. 3) Joint research activities and innovation acceleration through infrastructure development, exploratory projects, data identification and integration, methods, and standards.
