Project description
EU-Africa partnership to advance transition to green hydrogen
Eleven members from Africa and Europe are sharing their experiences and know-how to promote the green hydrogen transition of both continents. In this context, also thanks to the support of Hydrogen Europe and the African Hydrogen Partnership, the EU-funded JUST-GREEN AFRH2ICA project will develop a roadmap to guide the deployment of future synergistic investments and policies between the EU and the AU. The project will involve stakeholders from both continents engaging them in a training/capacity-building programme (also promoted by a UNESCO Chair initiative led by UNIGE) and encourage innovation/market opportunities supported by an open-innovation matchmaking platform (STAM). JUST-GREEN AFRH2ICA will deliver a set of 2030-2040-2050 AU roadmaps aligned with those in the EU. This will further support AU-EU synergistic and environmentally and socially sustainable transition to hydrogen.
Objective
Starting from the R&D/Roadmapping experiences (CEA, HySA, STRATH, IRESEN) and tools (JULICH, ARTELYS, IME, UNIGE) of consortium partners as well as the wide network of stakeholders at AU-EU level (thanks to AHP-HYDROGEN EUROPE relevant support), JUST-GREEN AFRH2ICA aims to develop a GREEN HYDROGEN JUST TRANSITION ROADMAP (based on the analysis of different AU green H2 scenarios analysed at socio-economic-technical level as well as inspired by EU Hydrogen and Just Transition Programmes) also to drive the deployment of future investment and policies in a synergic way between EU-AU. To do so, JUST-GREEN AFRH2ICA will fully involve AU-EU stakeholders also engaging them in a training/capacity building programme (promoted by an UNESCO Chair initiative lead by UNIGE) and stimulating innovation/market opportunities thanks to an open-innovation matchmaking platform (STAM). JUST GREEN AFRH2ICA aims to develop a GREEN HYDROGEN JUST TRANSITION ROADMAP that would make AU-EU transition pathways to H2 synergic, sustainable (from environmental and social point of view) and avoiding any new EU hydrogen colonization of Africa, but promoting a mutual benefit collaboration of the two continents towards the development of independent and collaborative H2 economies, R&D ecosystem and value chains. JUST GREN AFRH2ICA aims indeed to be the stepping stone of a collaborative H2 roadmap that, based on the analysis of different AU green H2 scenarios analysed at socio-economic-technical level via partners tools (also assessing local resources RES and water mainly as key for green H2 production) , will also drive future investment and policies as well as the setup of local manufacturing lines. Project final outcome will be a set of 2030-2040-2050 AU roadmaps that, duly aligned with EU ones, will pave the ground to the two continents hydrogen transition with a key common aspect: sustainability from an environmental and social point of view to guarantee a Green Hydrogen Just Transition.
