Periodic Reporting for period 1 - RISEnergy (Research Infrastructure Services for Renewable Energy)
Berichtszeitraum: 2024-03-01 bis 2025-08-31
The main objectives of RISEnergy are:
1.) enable research and innovation to increase energy efficiency and reduce the cost of energy technologies to foster wider use of renewables into energy systems through proactive innovation management having single entry point with tailor-made access roads for academics, industry, and SMEs, and advising RI providers, all acces Users, and policy makers on LCA, ICT development and networking issues;
2.) provide efficient transnational access (TA) to facilities to support renewable energy technologies and systems: Provide more than 2,500 days of access to major European and international world-leading analytical facilities;
3.) reach out to all stakeholders performing research along the value chain, from materials and technology development to applications in the eight most relevant fields of PV, CSP/STE , hydrogen, biofuels, offshore wind, ocean energy, integrated grids, and energy storage, research infrastructure providers and policy makers;
4.) provide comprehensive services of unprecedented quality: new cross-RI services, a single entry point, tailor-made access roads for academia industry, and SMEs with a particular focus on scientists from research fields in which the use of research infrastructures is not yet established.
As major activity in WP1 the network of experts and the terms of reference for the various expert groups including the Selection Panel (SP) to review the applications for TA (in WP2) have been established. Further activities have been to start the interaction with EU Set-Plan, existing RI networks and the analysis of gaps in Research Infrastructure services.
In WP2, activities linked to transnational and the virtual accesses (TA/VA) have been successfully started. The rules and guidelines for TA and VA were agreed and published. Two TA calls for proposals were published and a high number of access applications have been received, leading to an acceptance rate of below 50%. By August 2025, already seven TA projects from the first call had been completed.
The main objective of WP3 is to create cross-RI services to support and accelerate renewable energy system (RES) TRL progression & system integration, fostering collaboration across technology disciplines and stakeholder groups. A main achievement of the first period was to understand the value proposition of retrofitting micro power energy harvesting self-powered wireless sensor network nodes for detecting anomalies and predictive maintenance. Furthermore, the scientific data guidelines have been defined including a collection of use cases and compilation of existing metadata platforms and data repositories, from which Zenodo open data repository was identified to be used in the future course of the project.
A proactive innovation approach is the overall objective of WP4, through engagement with innovators, fostering cross-sector synergies, conducting technical appraisals, and facilitating broad industry and policy engagement. The first Innovation Collaborative Services have started and first experience gained with the application, review and consultation process.
The management of the overall project which is addressed in WP5 has started according to plan and all foreseen management procedures have been defined. The project conducted the Kick-off meeting as hybrid event in March 2024 in Brussels followed by two online project
meetings in Nov 2024 and May 2025 to inform about the activities, progress and especially the transnational and virtual accesses internally and also to external stakeholders. In parallel first dissemination and communication activities (e.g. launch of project website and LinkedIn account) were implemented by partners.
This also includes the successful lounge of and response to the first calls for transnational access, and also the start of virtual access in Work package 2. The implementation of a dedicated innovation support bringing together work achieved in all RES sectors with the ultimate objective of speeding up the maturity of technologies cross -fertilizing promising results from one technology to others is also highly novel.
