Periodic Reporting for period 1 - MOTIVATE XR (Maintenance, Support & Operation Training using Immersive Virtual and Augmented Technology for Efficiency with XR)
Periodo di rendicontazione: 2024-06-01 al 2025-11-30
The project’s innovation rests on democratizing the creation of immersive content. By providing "no-code" authoring tools, MOTIVATE XR enables technicians and trainers to build complex scenarios without specialized programming skills. To further accelerate adoption, the platform utilizes generative AI to automatically transform legacy technical documentation into structured knowledge graphs and interactive XR experiences. This entire lifecycle is supported by a cybersecure European backend and advanced hardware, such as the LeonardoXR smart glasses, which facilitate real-time remote assistance and spatial training.
The practical impact of MOTIVATE XR is validated through five diverse industrial pilots spanning aerospace, home appliances, the aluminium industry, energy distribution, and hybrid manufacturing. These demonstrations aim to reduce task completion times by over 20% and significantly improve learning retention. By testing the platform in real-world environments—from aircraft inspections to human-robot collaboration—the project ensures its solutions are robust and adaptable across various sectors.
Ultimately, MOTIVATE XR is guided by a human-centric compass. Unlike technology-driven models that force workers to adapt to new tools, this project employs participatory co-design to align hardware and software with the actual cognitive and physical needs of the workforce. A dedicated framework for ethical and legal governance manages risks such as data privacy and worker deskilling. This holistic approach ensures that the digital transition is not only technologically superior but also socially responsible and environmentally sustainable.
The technical core of this period was the deployment of a robust, cybersecure infrastructure. Built on a Kubernetes cluster with integrated identity management and object storage, the platform guarantees strict data sovereignty and GDPR compliance—a non-negotiable requirement for European industry. This foundation supports the Semantic Processing Engine, a standout innovation that utilizes Generative AI to instantly transform static PDF manuals into interactive knowledge graphs. These digital brains power a suite of intuitive authoring tools, including Inscape VTS and KAYROX, which are now seamlessly integrated with the MIRA Digital Twin platform and the LeonardoXR smart glasses for hands-free, gesture-controlled operation.
Beyond the code, the project has anchored its development in a rigorous Social, Ethical, and Legal (SEL) Framework. By defining specific user personas and journeys through participatory co-design, the consortium has ensured that the technology serves the technician rather than complicating their workflow. This human-centric approach is currently being battle-tested across five industrial pilots, including aerospace, energy distribution, and hybrid manufacturing. With the recent establishment of an expert Advisory Board to guide the transition from beta to final release, MOTIVATE XR remains firmly on track to deliver a commercially viable, ethical alternative to the current XR status quo.
AI-Driven Creation and No-Code Simplicity
The heart of this transition is the Semantic Processing Engine (SPE), an AI module that automatically ingests legacy technical manuals and PDFs to generate structured knowledge graphs. These graphs feed directly into a suite of intuitive authoring tools. Inscape VTS now allows instructors to refine AI-generated maintenance scenarios, while KAYROX enables users to edit content directly within a headset using Video See-Through technology. This "on-site" authoring represents a significant leap forward, allowing for real-time adjustments in the actual operational environment.
Sovereign Infrastructure and Digital Integration
To ensure European data autonomy, the platform operates on a secure Kubernetes architecture tailored for sensitive industries like aerospace and energy. This infrastructure supports air-gapped, offline deployments and simplifies authentication through secure QR-code logins. Beyond simple visuals, the project has achieved deep technical interoperability by integrating the MIRA Digital Twin platform. This allows real-time IoT telemetry to be injected directly into the user’s field of view, while the XVS Scanner converts standard video into 3D assets, creating a seamless pipeline from physical reality to digital assistance.
Hardware Independence and Ethical Governance
On the hardware front, the project is advancing European independence through the LeonardoXR smart glasses. The latest beta integrates HandyTrack gesture recognition for hands-free industrial work and a refactored software stack that prevents vendor lock-in by ensuring compatibility with commercial devices. Supporting this technical progress is a robust Social, Ethical, and Legal (SEL) Framework. This ensures the technology remains human-centric by addressing risks like worker deskilling and data privacy, using participatory co-design to ensure the final tools are as intuitive for a floor technician as they are for an IT specialist.
