As part of the European Commission’s international priorities, Digital Partnerships have recently been signed with
certain strategic partner countries. The objective of this call is to support the implementation of the EU-Japan
Digital Partnership with the specific focus of strengthening cooperation in High-Performance Computing (HPC)
and addressing the priority domains identified in the Partnership, namely climate and weather modeling, materials
science and biomedical science.
The consortium centers around a number of distinct joint projects on biomedical applications, climate and weather
modeling, and materials science developments as the core for collaboration with the involved Japanese institutes.
These core projects are augmented with transversal activities in the area of code optimization, performance
portability and parallel programming. During the lifetime of the project, the overall collaboration will be extended
so as to host other possible scientific areas of interests, as well as additional partners who wish to develop links
with Japan. The consortium addresses the cross-access policies between Europe and Japan concerning pre-exascale
and exascale supercomputers. The consortium implements a framework covering the joint development of HPC
applications, access to the supercomputers to test, optimize and improve knowledge about extreme-scale
architectures, and a structure to organize high-level symposia and long-term visits and exchanges between
researchers. The objective of this framework is to facilitate the exchange of skills and technological knowledge
about HPC and the scientific domains identified as strategically important by both Europe and Japan. Furthermore,
the consortium works towards developing a roadmap for sustainable HPC collaboration between the regions.
The HANAMI - HPC ALLIANCE FOR APPLICATIONS AND SUPERCOMPUTING INNOVATION: THE EUROPE - JAPAN
COLLABORATION brings together research teams representing excellence in HPC both in Europe and Japan. These
include high-level researchers and engineers from the application domains identified by the EU-Japan Digital
Partnership, researchers and engineers from the main supercomputing centers contributing with key expertise in
pre-exa and exascale systems, and the main ROs, research supporting organizations & industrial stakeholders
engaged in the development of HPC technologies for extreme-scale architectures. All these partners support the
common objective to strengthen and improve the HPC ecosystem across Japan and Europe through the co-design of
applications and sharing of information and expertise around HPC. HANAMI deploys all its actions with the
perspective of fostering long-term collaboration around HPC between the European and Japanese partners in mind.
