AVIATION RESEARCH ECOSYSTEM ADVANCED NOVEL APPROACH

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - AREANA (AVIATION RESEARCH ECOSYSTEM ADVANCED NOVEL APPROACH)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2024-01-01 al 2025-12-31

AREANA project is Coordination and Support Action project under Horizon Europe.

The main goal of the project is an improvement the efficiency of European aviation research.

The main objectives of the project are:
• provide new technologies for aviation in time, to enable compliance with the ambitious goals of the "Green Deal" and the "Fit for 55" program and
• to strengthen the competitiveness of European Aviation

In order to achieve these overarching goals, the following sub-goals shall be achieved:
• Greater harmonization of national research strategies within Europe
• More intensive international cooperation in European research
• Increasing the resources available for research
• Strengthening of cooperation in aviation research with friendly nations outside the EU
• Successful strengthening of political cooperation as part of Aerodays 2024/2025
• Strengthening of the Alliance for Zero Emission Aviation (AZEA)

AREANA is structured into three interconnected, yet thematically distinct parts. First, approaches improving on the coordination of aviation funding programmes will be addressed. Second, the Aerodays will be prepared. The consortium suggests them to take place, during the first half of 2025, in Warsaw, Poland. They would then coincide with the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union. Third, the AZEA (Alliance for Zero Emission) activities will be supported. Technological and administrative gaps are analysed and solutions removing the obstacles for zero-emission aircrafts are developed. A specific focus of the third activity is on hydrogen technology and its readiness in the aviation sector.

The first work package focuses on coordinating and supporting European, national, and regional R&I aviation programs while also considering the available research infrastructure. Various small-scale, quickly implementable methods and tools are developed to reach this goal. This will facilitate the transition to carbon-neutral aviation in line with the European Vision and Flight Path 2050.

The second work package focuses on organizing the next European Aeronautics Days (Aerodays) 2025 in Warsaw. This will coincide with the Polish EU Presidency in the EU’s Council. The Aerodays are one of the EU’s flagship events since 1991. For many years they contribute to the dissemination of scientific results in aviation and air transport. They manifest the Member State (MS) efforts in conducting R&D within the EU Research Framework Programme and across Europe. By its experience, knowledge, and aviation ecosystem expertise, the consortium wants to use the Aerodays to promote the aviation sector in the EU, with a special focus to its achievements and opportunities ahead. One way of achieving this is by offering a platform for the European Research Area (ERA).

The third work package focuses on providing relevant support to AZEA in fulfilling their vision of making aviation a sustainable and environmentally responsible industry. A supporting group to the AZEA’s efforts is established. It will serve as the central point of contact for AZEA, being responsible for the coordination and management of the various support activities provided by the consortium.
Expected results of the project are:
Optimized Call designs for more effective international cooperation
A comprehensive European Aviation Research Strategy map, combined with an alignment process for continuous update.
Intensified participation in research projects by Ukraine, UK, Switzerland and other interested nations achieved.
Consolidated vision of the paths available for the aviation sector stakeholders and joint directions of the development for aviation sector as communicated during the Aerodays
AZEA strengthened as a fully functionable and widely accepted driving force for sustainable aviation.
A report focusing on the current state and planned R&I for hydrogen and electric aviation technology in Europe and associated countries.

Expected outcomes are:
As a first direct result of the AREANA project, at least 3 European countries are expected to provide funding to newly created calls designed for intensified international cooperation.
At least 3 Country shall raise their participation in EU research in the two years after the project by more than 100% (or participate for the first time).
At least 10 countries are expected to join the newly implemented research strategy synchronization process.
At least 20 new partners have joined AZEA joining the efforts to further Zero emission aviation.
A shared vision between Policy Makers (EC, EU Parliament) and stakeholders from the aviation sector has been created and communicated at the Aerodays, laying the foundation to continuous improvement of the initial project results mentioned above.
Regarding the project contribution the AREANA project, by reaching its goals, impacts climate action and economical agility throughout the European Union. Five core elements contribute to this, by optimizing aviation research: a clear and comprehensive strategy, sufficient funding, efficient use of the funding, a unified political vision and a sustainable implementation. This sections describes how each of these elements is addressed by the AREANA project.
First, a clear and comprehensive strategy is needed to reach the described goals. A dedicated task of work package one will address improving the framework, to agree upon a joint strategy. Work package three will contribute to provide content for said strategy. Second, an effort will be made to ensure that sufficient funding is available to reach the goals. With the development of tailor-made joint calls, either national states, not yet offering a dedicated aviation research funding program, will be motivated to participate, or existing funds from national or regional funds will be allocated to international calls. Third, by allowing the cooperation of the best participants available, regardless of nationality, available funding will be used more efficiently. Fourth, a unified political vision will provide the required political support to strengthen the European dimension of aviation research. The Aerodays will offer a platform where this political will can be formed. One of the driving entities for this change will be AZEA. Fifth and last, the whole project aims towards establishing sustainable, long-term improvements. The idea of building long term solutions is at core and center of every suggested action. The AZEA network will be one of the paths ensuring the sustainable use of the achieved results.
In practice, the AREANA project aims to achieve significant progress in order to enable optimized R&I cooperation. In this way, the contribution of European aviation research to the goals of society will be further improved. The results of the project are aimed at facilitating practical research cooperation for stakeholders, as well as at making national and regional sponsors invest more in international cooperation.
