Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SCRREEN3 (Solutions for CRitical Raw materials - a European Expert Network 3)
Periodo di rendicontazione: 2024-01-01 al 2025-06-30
To do so, the project builds on two pillars: the main one is the support to the EU tri-annual CRM assessment, the second one is the support to EU foresight studies, which is the analysis of the future supply and demand of raw materials, technology gaps and innovation potential along the raw materials value chains.
To increase European autonomy for securing CRM supply, SCRREEN relies on an expert network, which is strengthened throughout the project development. The database containing more than 200 experts referenced by material is being continously updated and challenged as new deliverables are realized and as factsheets are being completed and validated. Experts from outside the consortium are selected and invited to give their insights during workshops.
Finally, the project aims at providing expert advice to build resilient industries by :
• reducing EU dependencies on other countries for critical raw materials and technologies, focusing on securing access to primary and secondary raw materials
• enhancing the flexibility of the EU’s industrial base with a strong emphasis on promoting EU value chains.
With regard to the EU CRM assessment, activities are based on two fundamental pillars:
- updating factsheets
- organising validation workshops
This initial period provided an opportunity to provide an initial update of the factsheets, in particular thanks to the digitisation of the tool.
The validation WS will be organised in 2026, for a final publication of the next CRM list in May 2027.
In addition to the FDT, two Outlook Reports and two Ad-Hoc Requests were produced, contributing to the project’s broader analytical objectives.
Another key event was the half-day SCRREEN3–IRTC joint conference, held during the Raw Materials Week 2024 in December. Under the theme “Critical Raw Materials Intelligence – From Data to Decisions,” the conference gathered stakeholders to explore the role of intelligence tools in raw materials policy and planning. The SCRREEN3 team also conducted exclusive interviews with leading experts, who shared their insights on challenges such as policy frameworks, international collaboration, sustainability strategies, supply risk management, and the use of innovative decision-support tools.
Lastly, as part of the project's outreach and communication activities, the first educational video titled “Meet Emily” was launched in the first quarter of 2025. This video forms part of the SCRREEN3 Public Awareness and Education Campaign, aiming to engage a broader audience and raise awareness about the importance of critical raw materials in everyday life.
Another highlight of the reporting period was the in-depth workshop organised on July 1st, 2025, in Brussels. This event focused on the strategic topic of the European battery industry, bringing together key stakeholders from industry, policy, and research. The workshop fostered interactive discussions and knowledge exchange, resulting in a set of targeted recommendations aimed at strengthening the EU's battery value chain and supporting the critical raw materials agenda.
This will change in the second phase, particularly with the organisation of validation workshops and the contribution of external experts.
