Shaping the future of aviation: progress in green hydrogen refuelling technologies

The challenge of integrating hydrogen as an aviation fuel looms large. Conventional refuelling methods face hurdles in safety, rapidity and logistical efficiency. In this context, the EU-funded ALRIGH2T project is designed to revolutionise liquid hydrogen (LH2) aircraft refuelling, addressing these challenges head-on. Specifically, two innovative technologies are at the forefront: the first is direct LH2 refuelling with operational protocols and a digital twin model. The second is LH2 tank swap refuelling with end-to-end logistics. Both will be tested in two demonstrators in major airports. Transversal activities cover technical and techno-economic boundaries, H2 use in ground operations, and environmental, safety and regulatory aspects. Led by a consortium of European industry giants and research organisations, ALRIGH2T aspires to pioneer LH2 refuelling at an airport scale.

Objective

ALRIGH2T responds in full to the “expected outcomes” and “scope” of the HORIZON-CL5-2023-D5-01-07 topic, by pioneering the first airport-level demonstrations of LH2 refuelling for aviation in Europe. Demonstrations will take place at two major airports, Milan Malpensa and Paris, to validate the introduction of hydrogen in a real airport environment under different operational contexts and ensure broad applicability. The overall objectives of ALRIGH2T are to:
- To define the technical requirements and boundary conditions for safe, feasible, and efficient LH2 refuelling in European airports.
- To develop and validate innovative components, including a centrifugal pump, an instrumented tank, advanced sensors, and a digital twin model of the refuelling process that, once validated experimentally in the demo, will allow broader investigation of all the variables involved and predictions on future evolution.
- To demonstrate both direct LH2 refuelling and GH2 end-to-end logistics and supply chain solutions at Milan Malpensa and Paris airports, with technologies reaching TRL 6 by 2027.
- To establish regulatory, safety, and environmental frameworks that will help future certification and standardization of LH2 and GH2 operations.
- To share project results broadly, engage with stakeholders and EU initiatives, and ensure a clear pathway to industrial uptake and long-term impact.
ALRIGH2T has the ambition of demonstrating, for the first time, LH2 refuelling in a scale compatible with airport operations, synergizing with the Clean Aviation research and development efforts at the aircraft level.
The project is implemented by a consortium built on the competences of top European industrial players, positioned along entire hydrogen and aeronautic value chain, complemented by research and technology organisations and selected member of the Advisory Board and EASA. ALRIGH2T is expected to be a cornerstone in the path towards the deployment of LH2 as an aviation fuel, strengthening the European research and industry leadership and consolidating the role of green airports as hubs of the H2 economy.
