Retrofitting of fishing fleets with low payback time and easy to deploy solutions for footprint and GHG emissions reduction

Standardization & modularization of the air-lubrication designs (si apre in una nuova finestra)

A report on methodology for the prototype vessels used to define a design-for-retrofitting, based on standardization and modularization principles. They will be extrapolated to other types of fishing fleets in the North or Baltic seas, in order to assess the replicability of the novel implementations.

A report on previously UD-tapes and LFT pellets developed in AIMPLAS reformulated with suitable commercial additives (halogen free flame retardants, electromagnetic absorbing particles, processing aids, etc..) to fulfil marine & task 3.3 requirements will be generated. The obtained materials will be fully characterized according to the EN/ISO/ASTM standards before to be used in the battery pack that will be manufactured and assembled in a real ship in WP5. A well-detailed datasheets will be prepared for each composite that will be used in the battery.

Policy recommendations (si apre in una nuova finestra)

Policy recommendations report will be prepared on the base of consultation with Standardization Bodies (e.g., ISO and CEN) and related working groups about safety critical issues (electric, etc.) to assess the current and prospect evolution of safety standards applicable to small size vessels. Additionally, Policy brief will be created and published, entailed as umbrella recommendations for policy makers and marine administration and future roadmaps.

Requirements for materials, components, and demo-ships (si apre in una nuova finestra)

Definition of the requirements of the proposed solutions to reduce the GHG emissions in fishing ships when applied on a real-life will be done. The material specification and performance requirements for the selected solutions will be shared with the consortium to ensure reliable and consistent samples can be produced during the different phases of the project. In addition, an analysis of the material and technology trends related to the identified application should be performed to anticipate customer expectations and legislative constraints. National and international requirements applicable to the demo boats and equipment installation will be identified. Suitable sensors to be installed in the ship to support eco-driving tools, to minimize reactive maintenance and reduce GHG emissions will be defined. All requirements and supply interactions between partners will be summarized. The findings and conclusions will be used to define the tasks of WP2 to WP4 and scale-up the process to TRL6 in WP5. Optimal technical modernization measures for the fishing vessels operating on the market of the Baltic & North Sea regions will be estimated along with the social, economic and environmental impact. Action plan for development of the sustainable fisheries, including technical solutions proposed by the project, environmental monitoring and measuring campaigns, data collection management and use for spatial planning including involvement of the fishing community, NGOs and governing/administrative bodies on national and international levels created.

Project Management Plan prepared giving clear picture of the whole project structure dependences and deadlines, distribution of work among the partners, assessment of the results, risks management, etc. The activities that will be involved in the management of the project resources include: i) coordination and careful monitoring of the activities of the project; ii) organising the dates, agenda, and minutes of all the GA meetings. iii) overseeing the different managerial positions (EB, TSC, C&D M, EM), iv) ensuring that the decision-making procedures for the management bodies are respected; v) reporting progress; vi) financial administration and administrative management vii) ensuring all partners adhere to the contractual obligations of the GA; viii) maintenance of the Consortium Agreement.

Report of data driven PMS & EMS development (si apre in una nuova finestra)

Energy transfer and efficiency calculations for energy consumers like RIM drive & Air lubrication system and generators like PV with their energy exchange will be defined at subsystem level in electrical architecture onboard and reported. A holistic approach will be conducted for energy analysis or existing fleets and novel energy efficiency management of retrofitted ships that are using new maritime energy sources including PV, battery and energy supply via shore connection and will be described in the report. The approach used for conventional ship energy analysis of subsystem level architecture will be updated according to different types of retrofitted vessels benefiting from experiences in ship energy subsystem level architecture and model electrical energy gain of electrification energy saving solutions in the proposed demonstration ships.

Based on the initial risk identification reported in Table 3.1e the risk indicators will be defined considering the overall project progress and will be reported in M9 and with the official reports and continuously reviewed.

Document describing the strategy and activities related to the communication of the project and the pathways for the dissemination and exploitation of the project results.

Standardization and modularization of the appendage designs (si apre in una nuova finestra)

The results of the obtained hull modifications and appendages received during Task 2.1 will be laid down as a base to the report dedicated to Standardization and modularization of the appendage’s designs. The data obtained, and the knowledge gained from the analysis done for the prototype vessels in the previous tasks will be used to define a design-for-retrofitting methodology based on standardization and modularization principles. Complex approach to the hull appendages design will be applied, evaluating technical parameters and technological aspects of the sensor's integration, hydrodynamic effectiveness of the appendage's connections to the hull and scalability and application possibility to other types of the fishing boats. This report will be reviewed and completed at the last month of the project and in agreement with the Deliverable D3.5.

Communication Toolkit, Public website & Social Media groups (si apre in una nuova finestra)

D7.1 will contain the following: (1) mapping of REFEST stakeholders, analysis of their jobs/needs in order to establish the most suitable D&C formats and channels for each target group; (2) methods and channels and their associated activities and tools to reach the expected impacts in terms of awareness, acceptance and final uptake (project website, conferences, workshops, publications, videos, etc.); (3) Dissemination and publication procedures according the EC, GA and CA; and (4) the schedule and complementarities of D&C among partners. The project Communication toolkit, including printed and digital informative material will be created (flyers, poster and roll-up), along with the project’s “visual identity” (e.g., project logo and templates), to structure the project’s brand. Additionally, the project website will be set at the beginning of the project and regularly updated with project’s achievements, will include different relevant materials for the project as news, events, publications and downloadable material. The project’s social media pages will be also created.

Report of thermoplastic composites for hull appendages (si apre in una nuova finestra)

The report on optimized resin for the use in under water sea conditions development including improvement of resistance of the acrylic resin to sea water by introducing suitable additives, reducing the fouling by changing the surface properties of resin itself for improved adhesion of special coatings or paints and maximizing interface properties with carbon fibres and glass fibres aiming in superior mechanical properties. The special resin will be also tested for compatibility with their PVDF-based piezoelectric film sensor as feasibility for piezo-sensor embedding into the hull’s composite resin. The tests results in regard processing temperature, utilized chemicals, adhesion, and delamination will be documented.

Report of Air lubrication system methods and designs (si apre in una nuova finestra)

A Report on evaluation of different air lubrication methods suitable for retrofitting under the vessel. Estimation of air supply system capacity and cost-benefit study of the air lubrication, including power consumption will be described.

Report of eco-driving solutions (si apre in una nuova finestra)

The eco-driving software will be configured in accordance with the battery pack and rim-drive motor’s technical data, as well as the vessel’s sensors proposed in WP2. The report on system composition and integration into the ship will be drawn describing results on design, installation and exploitation parameters as well as implementation of eco-driving modes on PMS and EMS.

Report of RIM engine power increase and localization (si apre in una nuova finestra)

1.A Report on design solutions for 50 kW RIM motors will be reported. It will include CFD simulation and experimentation necessary to assess the drag induced by the rim-drive pod and to define the engine power definition and localization ensuring the best propulsion efficiency. 2.50 kW RIM drive demonstrators will be created for installation to the demo boats for further testing in real time environment.

Modification of flexible PV panels for their integration in ships (si apre in una nuova finestra)

1.A report on the Flexible PV modules development, that have improved compatibility with use on ships, on deck or annexes will be drawn, describing mechanical, chemical and vibration resistance, as well as development and testing results on anti-skipping and texturization solutions. Selection of the suitable adhesives to join the Flexible PV panels to the surface of the ships will be reported. The report will also include changes in the PV module’s design to include the contactless technology and its adaptation to integration in ships.2.Demo: Flexible PV modules including contactless electrical connection created for installation to the demo boats for further testing in real time environment. Expected installed PV power is 5 kWp.

Report of integration of fibre-optic sensors in composites (si apre in una nuova finestra)

Report will focus on methods for integration of sensors/multi-sensors with composite materials for hull appendages and battery box, and the lab validation of sensor functions for this use case. Composite panels (500 cm2) will be designed and manufactured, integrating sensors on the surface and inside the panel. The composite part with the sensors will be put through static and dynamic thermal, and mechanical tests to assess the response of the sensors and to evaluate the ultimate conditions before the sensor malfunction and/or composite part failure/damage. The validation of robust methods for integration, with manufacturability and maintained functionality in focus, will be the basis for preparation of demonstration parts in selected vessels in WP5.

The resulting work will be captured in the initial version of the related data management plan deliverable (by M6) to be, further updated as a living document during the project to reflect any relevant developments.

Data management plan will be developed with the aim to establish the mechanisms to handle research data during and after the project -following an open data approach whenever possible- and establishing how data is collected, processed and generated; the methodologies and standards applied; the identification of data and how data will be curated and preserved during and at the end of the project as well, how to guarantee long-term access; the assignment of responsibilities as partners level, including the designation of DPO by each partner organisation.
