Project description
Oral peptides for metabolic disorders treatment
Gastrointestinal metabolic disorders including diabetes are rising in prevalence and treatment usually entails lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, and various medications including hormones. Funded by the European Research Council, the HormoCaps project endeavours to pioneer a dual-action drug delivery system for the oral administration of peptides that can stimulate hormone secretion. The project focuses on demonstrating translational feasibility, assessing the formulation's mode of action across different gastrointestinal mucosa regions, and consolidating results for a licensing plan. The idea is for the oral peptides to synergise with encapsulated bioactive molecules for improved clinical outcome. Success in these objectives will guide the formulation towards commercialisation, offering potential advancements in oral peptide therapies for metabolic disorders.
Objective
HormoCaps will help us demonstrate the viability as a commercial product of a dual-action drug delivery system which synergizes its own biological effect and that of the encapsulated bioactive molecule for the oral delivery of peptides. This would represent an alternative to current oral incretin-based treatments for gastrointestinal metabolic disorders. In HormoCaps, we will (i) demonstrate the translational feasibility of our strategy; (ii) evaluate the capacity of the formulation to simultaneously stimulate the secretion of hormones that are present at different concentrations at distinct regions of the gastrointestinal mucosa; and (iii) consolidate our results towards a licensing plan to guide the commercialization of our formulation.
