Diagnostics for cancer and cardiovascular diseases based on diet-derived sugars

Project description

Studying sugar-bond secrets to detect diseases

Diet influences health, with varied dietary patterns implicated in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and others such as cancer, diabetes, obesity and hypertension. Notably, excessive red meat consumption is often cited as a risk factor for cancer and heart diseases. In this context, the ERC-funded SugarBiomarker project will develop biomarkers for cancer and CVDs. Using own-developed nano-printed arrays with a range of glycans, the project screens serum from a broad cohort presenting validated diet and disease conditions. Deep-learning analysis will then be done to identify unique antibody signatures, potentially enabling early disease detection. These sugar-based diagnostics promise personalised dietary advice and enhanced treatment strategies, offering hope for improved outcomes in cancer and CVD prognosis.

Objective

Diet can dramatically affect health, and different dietary habits have been associated with various human diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), type II diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. In particular, high consumption of red meat has been frequently suggested as a risk factor for human cancers and CVD. We aim to develop biomarkers for cancer and CVD based on signatures of antibodies against glycans. We developed unique nano-printed arrays with various glycans. These will be used for high-throughput serum screening of a large cohort of individuals with validated diet and disease conditions, followed by deep-learning analysis. Unique signatures of antibodies could potentially identify such diseases at an early stage, to allow personalized dietary recommendations or a better therapeutic window. Thereby, such novel sugar-based disease diagnostics could dramatically improve prognosis of cancer and CVD.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.

€ 150 000,00
Total cost

The total costs incurred by this organisation to participate in the project, including direct and indirect costs. This amount is a subset of the overall project budget.
