Precision biomarker based on digital pathology and artificial intelligence to guide fast and cost-effective personalized treatment decision support for colorectal cancer patients

Project description

Diagnostic software for reliable personalised cancer treatment

The oncology community widely agrees on the need for personalised cancer treatment decisions. Many patients receive unnecessary treatment, with up to 90 % of those undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy experiencing no benefits and often suffering severe side effects. The EIC-funded Histotype Px project introduces pioneering diagnostic software developed by DoMore Diagnostics (DoMore Dx) that enables personalised cancer treatment in a straightforward and cost-effective manner. This solution uses deep learning algorithms applied to cancer tissue images in local labs equipped with digital pathology tools. In the case of colorectal cancer (CRC), it can categorise patients into low, intermediate, or high-risk groups, potentially sparing up to 250 000 patients from unnecessary chemotherapy.

Objective

There is consensus in the oncology community that there is a large need for personalized cancer treatment decisions as patients suffer from large-scale overtreatment. Up to 90% of patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy have no effect, many suffer severe side effects. DoMore Diagnostics (DoMore Dx) delivers pioneering diagnostics software that enables personalized cancer treatment in a simple and cost-efficient way. We provide deep learning algorithms applied to cancer tissue whole slide images (WSI) in the adjuvant chemotherapy setting. With end-to-end deep learning we have taken a completely new approach to this challenge. Our test can be run in local labs with digital pathology equipment and does not consume any tissue. DoMore Dx is personalized medicine made simple.
In CRC, our test can stratify patients into low, intermediate, or high risk with a hazard ratio >10. This information can be used to take up to 250,000 patients out of chemotherapy and save 4 billion EUR globally every year.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
