Enhancing Magnetic Permeability of Concrete to Boost Efficiency of Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) on Electric Roadways

Wireless charging for electric vehicles

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, challenges such as battery limitations, insufficient charging infrastructure and limited driving range remain significant barriers. Implementing dynamic wireless charging systems for EVs offers a promising solution to these issues. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the HMPC project aims to develop high magnetic permeability (MP), cost-effective concrete for road pavements installed over wireless power transfer charging pads, thereby enhancing WPT efficiency. The project will investigate two techniques: producing high-MP aligned steel fibre-reinforced concrete panels and developing concrete panels incorporating magnetite aggregate. Expected outcomes include a reduction in energy losses in electric roads, along with the development of sustainable concrete made from low-cost materials.

Objective

The transition from fossil-fuelled vehicles to electric vehicles (EV) plays a vital role in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ultimately achieve net zero by 2050. However, the main challenges currently facing EV revolve around battery technology, availability of charging infrastructure and limited driving range. To tackle these challenges, the implementation of dynamic wireless charging (DWC) systems for EV is a key strategy on the agenda in the world.
This project aims to develop a high magnetic permeability (MP) and cost-effective concrete (HMPC) for use in road pavement over static/dynamic wireless energy transfer (WPT) charging pads to enhance WPT efficiency. The project will explore two different techniques, maximising the success rate of achieving the main project goal. It will focus on developing high MP aligned steel fibre reinforced concrete panels to be bonded to charging pads or road surfaces as well as the development of high MP magnetite aggregate concrete panels. It is expected that the project outcome will improve WPT efficiency by reducing energy losses in existing electric roads between 0.5% and 3%. In addition, economic, disseminable and sustainable concretes will be developed by using low cost, high availability and sustainable materials instead of extremely expensive metals, such as cobalt and nickel.

The researcher will receive comprehensive training to enhance his future career, gaining expertise in new analytical and experimental techniques, project management, advanced training methodologies, supervision, academic publishing, patent writing, and preparing funding proposals. Furthermore, the project will ultimately contribute to the sustainability of energy resources, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and create new job opportunities.
