Objective
In a globalised world, minoritised languages face increasing pressures, and the number of traditional native speakers often continues to decline despite supportive policies and community efforts. As a result, individuals often referred to as ‘learners’ play a vital role in the survival of these languages. To date, there has been no in-depth, comparative, historical assessment of culturally active ‘new users’—individuals who deliberately learned a minoritised language and contributed to its preservation and development as writers and cultural agents. The NUDGERS project addresses this gap by focusing on the late 19th and early 20th centuries, examining understudied figures and centres of activity. The 6 living Celtic languages—Breton, Cornish, Irish, Manx, Scottish Gaelic, and Welsh—form the project’s primary corpus. While diverse in size, official recognition, and socio-political context, they are also cohesive due to their linguistic and cultural relatedness and shared pan-Celtic initiatives. Drawing on the expertise of a multilingual team, NUDGERS will explore the background, motivation, and learning journeys of new users, and analyse their creative output, legacy, and impact. This will be achieved through analysis of published sources and archival materials, employing a multidisciplinary approach that combines literary analysis, cultural studies, sociolinguistics, digital humanities, and philosophy. The findings will inform the development of the first theoretical model of new user involvement in Celtic languages and propose a framework for analysing how these individuals influenced the languages both formally (grammar, vocabulary, style) and socially (revival and retention). The project will produce case studies, prompt a reconsideration of terminology, and initiate a reassessment of literary and cultural history. NUDGERS’ findings will be transferable to other contexts, facilitating further research on cultural and linguistic heritage across Europe and beyond.
