The aim of the project is to increase the genetic variability of the cultivated lupin species. Crosses between low yielding cultivated species and a wild form with a high amount of pods per plant shall be carried out to develop a new high yielding cultivar. After determining the crossing barriers it shall be tried to overcome them by the right environmental conditions.
Some first steps have been made to cross barriers limiting lupin as a successful protein crop in agriculture. As a main problem incompatibility between several lupin species has been tackled. As a first step some crossing barriers have been located, but further selection to improve fertility and other yield characteristics is required.
Crosses were made under controlled environmental conditions either in the greenhouse or in phytochambers. In additions, some microscopical work was done to determine the crossing barriers.
