Obiettivo
Though several cereals may be produced in excess within the European Community (EC) their protein content and quality, mainly determined by their amino acid composition, leads to a situation where still considerable import takes place. In this situation imporvement of protein quality is highly required. To some extent this can be attained by balanced fertilizer applications; potentially more progress may be expected from plant breeding programmes.
Research concentrated on improving agronomic techniques for cultivation and seed production in opaque 2 maize (Zea may). This genotype, through characterized by high protein content, has several drawbacks that make it less acceptable to the farmer for cultivation. The experiment led to a better definition of optimal cultivation conditions, time of sowing and harvesting, sowing density, nitrogen fertilization rate, plant protection, which however will only result in marginal improvement to the practical farmer.
