Project description
Taking cataract surgery to the next level
Millions suffer from cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens that leads to blindness if left untreated. Traditional surgeries come with inherent challenges. The EIC-funded Next level cataract surgery project will bring to market a device-based solution that ensures optimal outcomes for each patient. The device is equipped with imaging technology that offers unparalleled control over lens positioning. Comprising three versatile modules, the system begins with a diagnostic screening to detect any issues beforehand, reducing the risk of re-surgery. During surgery, the image-guided system offers real-time monitoring and computer-assisted guidance for precise intraocular lens (IOL) placement based on the visual axis. After surgery, the post-operative diagnostic system measures IOL position and assists the surgeon in realigning the lens if necessary.
Objective
AkknaTeks device-based solution is introducing a unique imaging technology to overcome the current hurdles of nowadays cataract surgery. It is designed to offer full control over the lens position at any point of the treatment; for the first time guaranteeing best possible results for every lens implanted. The solution consists of a set of 3 modules which also can be used independently. Pre-operatively, the diagnostic system for patient screening allows detection of capsular bag dislocation, calculates the optimum lens design and eliminates IOLs not suitable for the respective patient to reduce the need for potential re-surgery right from the start. During the surgery, the image-guided system enables real-time monitoring of the IOL placement and computer assisted guidance to ensure accurate placement based on the visual axis. After surgery, the post-operative diagnostic system measures the IOL position and, if needed, helps the surgeon re-align the IOL, as it may move after surgery.
