Project description
Additive to bone cements to improve osteoporosis treatment
Bone cements, which can be moulded, implanted as a paste, and set within the body, are widely used in orthopaedic surgery. In this context, the EU-funded SMART-SOFT project aims to develop an innovative solution called Inossia Cement Softener to revolutionise the treatment of osteoporosis and promote healthy, active ageing. Specifically, it is an additive for bone cements that reduces their stiffness by more than 50 %, adjusting it to better match the bone into which it is injected. This adjustment minimally impacts spinal biomechanics and reduces the risk of new vertebral fractures by 75 %. This solution has the potential to significantly improve the outcomes of vertebral augmentation treatments for osteoporotic patients and decrease healthcare costs.
Objective
The Inossia Cement Softener is an additive (a softener) for bone cements that lowers their stiffness by 50-75% and adjusts it to that of the bone it is injected into. This does not alter the spinal biomechanics to the extent that the currently used cements do which in turn reduces the risk of new unnecessary vertebral fractures by 75%.
The Inossia Cement Softener has the potential to become a true game-changer and revolutionise the outcome of vertebral augmentation treatments in osteoporotic patients:
the patients will experience immediate pain relief, allowing them to go back to everyday life without the risk of rehospitalization,
the clinicians will be able to offer an efficient treatment
the healthcare payers will save money previously unnecessary spent on the retreatment of already treated patients
Our innovation is designed to revolutionise the treatment of osteoporosis, ensuring a healthy and active ageing.
