2007 Researchers Night in Iceland

Objectif

In order to reach its goal of becoming the most competitive and dynamic knowledge based economy in the world, devoting an average of 3% of the member states’ annual GDP to R&D, the EU requires large numbers of new researchers entering the labour market in coming years. The European Commission has concluded that there is a need to raise public awareness about the role of researchers in society and attract more young people into scientific careers in order to ensure the availability of adequate human resources for the future. This proposal incorporates Iceland into the 2007 Researchers’ Night - a European wide awareness raising activity to be held on 28 September 2007. It brings together various organizations in the field of R&D and the mass media to achieve three main objectives: 1. Enhance the recognition of researchers’ role and contribution to society by the public at large 2. Highlight the European dimension of R&D activities and the international dimension of researchers’ careers 3. Encourage more young people to embark on careers in R&D and thereby contribute to the number of researchers active in the European Research Area The project is divided into three work packages (WP): WP 0 addresses its management and impact assessment and WP 1 animation activities leading up to the Researchers' Night. WP 2 consists of various tasks performed in planning and implementing a large central event on 28 September in the Reykjavík city centre. RANNIS, the project coordinator, is a public research support agency under the Ministry of Education and Research. It allocates public research grants and promotes international research cooperation. It is also responsible for science communication and has great relations with the whole of the research community, public organizations and the media. RANNIS successfully coordinated Iceland’s participation in the 2005 and 2006 Researchers’ Nights and has participated in a number of other European funded projects.
