Key Performance Factor Assessment and Valorisation for Successful EU-FP Project Participation of innovative SMEs in the Area of HEALTH

Periodic Report Summary - KAPPA-HEALTH (Key Performance Factor Assessment and Valorisation for Successful EU-FP Project Participation of innovative SMEs in the Area of HEALTH)

This report summarises the results and achievements of the Specific Support Action 'KAPPA-HEALTH' during the first 18 months, i.e. between 1 July 2008 and 31 December 2009. Activities, tasks performed and deliverables met within this first reporting period are analysed and reported.

'KAPPA-HEALTH' has the overall objective to assess and valorise the success of small and medium-sized biomedical companies (SMEs), which have received funds from the European Union Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes (FP6 and FP7) for research and technological development.

The KAPPA-HEALTH project intends to identify 10 key performance factors (in Greek, Kappa means 10 'ten') and aim at becoming a preferred 'check-list' for SMEs with respect to 'things to take into account' for better exploiting the research resulting from LSH/health projects in the near future. This check-list will be the core of a practical guide booklet of 'do's and don'ts'.

Identifying key performance factors and analysing them will make it possible to accelerate and enhance the dissemination and exploitation of the project outcomes generated by high-technology and research-intensive SMEs in FP6/FP7. After a selection of most exemplary SMEs among 500 to 1 000 SMEs initially addressed by a questionnaire, we will work with 40 SMEs in this project that may profit directly from the training support and additional information together with link to other funding opportunities.

We list below the individual KAPPA-HEALTH project objectives and operational goals in order to assess and valorise the outcomes of SMEs in LSH/health:
1. Identify successful SMEs participations by sending questionnaires to 500 to 1 000 SMEs that participated in FP6/FP7 projects with expected return rate of 5 %-10 %.
2. Identify key performance factors by 40 interviews of 40 SMEs (1 time).
3. Analyse identified key performance factors and look for common lines and prepare a booklet with 'check-list'.
4. Disseminate results through the project website with online streaming movie + DVD in other channels.
5. Train and motivate SMEs by organising 20 SMEs personal coaching sessions, six training sessions addressed to intermediaries and three SMEs workshops.

The seven work packages (WPs) of the project are structured according to the types of activities and objectives:
- WP1 is dedicated to the project management and communication.
- WP2 comprises identification of potential key performance factors for successful FP6/FP7 participation and definition of appropriate methodology.
- WP3 focused on the identification of successful FP6/FP7 participating SMEs.
- WP4 is dedicated to the elaboration of questionnaires and implementation of SMEs enquiries and interviews.
- WP5 will prepare training material for SMEs coaching, valuation and support on additional capital acquisition.
- WP6 will operate statistical analysis, interpretation and establish the list of performance factors from which will be indentified the 10 KAPPA-factors.
- WP7 will deal with dissemination, training workshops, preparation of tools, and information campaigns.

The project consortium comprises seven contractors from six countries, with partners 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 being work package leaders.
