SME Language Consulting Centre

Objective

The consortium will establish an SME Language Consulting Centre (LCC) which focuses on the multilingual production needs of SMEs. It will offer two consulting services: 'The On-line Language Consulting Centre' (OLCC) and 'The Language Strategy Seminars'.

The On-line Language Consulting Centre will provide language consulting and information services, that is accessible via electronic marketplaces, and multilingual (starting with Danish, English, French and German). The service will be a one-stop-shop solution to SMEs' language technology and management problems with a company-specific view. SMEs needing advice in language provision, tool selection and introduction, terminology database modelling, data conversion, foreign language document handling and many other language topics can consult the LCC knowledge base, a collection of frequently asked questions/answers and links to other web-sites, or turn with their question directly to the OLCC consulting staff for specific advice.

The Language Strategy Seminar, will give a more comprehensive overview on multilingual production and help the participants to build a so-called 'Multilingual Roadmap' which is a structured plan to achieve multilingual excellence in their organisations.

An Empirical SME language management study will be another important project result. Based on the LCC consulting experience, an analysis will identify main shortcomings of SMEs in this area and present best practice examples.

Language barriers are a severe threat to the global competitiveness of SMEs. Describing products, communicating with foreign partners or simply presenting itself on the global market, requires the production and translation of considerable amounts of text. Shorter product development cycles and increased competition requires increased production of text in a shorter period of time and often under severe cost pressure. The necessity to produce for more media/platforms/formats and to be aware of product liability issues adds further complexity to the documentation and translation/localisation processes.

Although multilingual production technologies, tools and methods are currently available, SMEs tend to lack trained people and recourses to access and select those technologies. The consortium calls this problem the AA gap - the gap between the AVAILABILITY of technologies, tools and methods and the ACCESS to them by SMEs - and perceives this gap as a major threat to the future competitiveness of those SMEs. To create a state-of-the-art multilingual production environment for SMEs it seems most appropriate to provide company-specific, problem-focused, reasonably priced, external help to the employees who are in charge of those questions in SMEs.
