Mediating and Moderating variable analysis in energy balance behaviours change interventions- an International collaboration

Final Report Summary - MEMO INTERNATIONAL (Mediating and Moderating variable analysis in energy balance behaviours change interventions- an International collaboration)

To better inform future systematic intervention development and to improve effectiveness of energy balance behaviour interventions, identification of how the interventions worked (analyses of mediators) and for whom the interventions worked (analyses of moderators) is needed. Identifying mediators of intervention effects can prompt future intervention developers to strengthen or add effective intervention components and to remove ineffective intervention components resulting in more cost efficacious interventions. In addition, identifying moderations can stimulate intervention developers can seek for new intervention strategies for non-responders.

The MeMo International programme has the overall aim to strengthen and enrich international cooperation in the research field of mediation and moderation analyses applied in obesity prevention research. Therefore the MeMo International programme will include training and skills development related to statistical techniques and applications of theoretical models.

During a four year period researchers from Deakin visited VUmc and UGhent, and researchers from VUmc Technical University of Lisbon and the university of Ghent visited Deakin. During these visits the involved researchers worked together on data analyses, data reporting and writing scientific articles. They provided presentations and workshops in order to transfer their knowledge and learn skills to other researchers. Moreover, there was joint meeting in Ghent where four researchers from VUmc, four researchers from Deakin and two researchers from FMH presented and discussed their findings with the audience. Knowledge was not only transferred within the consortium, but also to a broader public by means of symposia and workshops.

So far, the collaboration resulted in at least 14 publications, and another 10 submitted papers, three workshops, and more than 10 seminars and other presentations. Moreover, VUmc, UGhent and FMH are all three part of two consortia that submitted a proposal in the Horizon 2020 PHC-26 call.
