Search for high energy neutrino emission from the galactic center

Obiettivo

Main purpose of the IceCube neutrino telescope is to detect high energy neutrinos of astro- physical origin. Within this project we aim to extend the field of view of the instrument to observe the galactic center, which is not in the generic field of view of a neutrino telescope at the South Pole. This can be accomplished by a new data selection, which detects events of particularily high energy or events of low energy starting inside the detector and by the development of new, more sophisticated reconstruction methods. We propose to reintegrate Dr. David J. Boersma, who has previously been employed by the University of Wisconsin (Madison, USA),into the European astro-particle physics community. The IRG funds will be used for the foundation of a junior research group focused on this topic. Dr. Boersma is a key researcher of the IceCube neutrino telescope and expert on the reconstruction software. He has already succesfully conducted a similar analysis focused on the detection of the shadow of the Moon in underground cosmic rays muons.
