Intelligent environment for customer services through machine remote control

Objective

The objective of ELCANO is to develop an innovative customer support system that enables a significant decrease in machine unavailability due to inefficiencies in the customer support process, and a reduction of set-up and maintenance fees.

In the machine tool industry, there is an increasing customer demand for continuous, cost-effective and efficient support across the entire machine life-cycle. Machine tools are often customised to the needs of each customer and high costs are usually incurred in production losses due to machinery breakdown, customer's 'on-site' assistance during the set-up stages, as well as during the later stages of the machine life cycle when maintenance work is needed. ELCANO aims to reduce machine unavailability through the enhancement of the quality of the services that machine tool manufacturers can offer their customers (mainly in terms of installation lead-times and response-time to problems), while at the same time reducing the current costs of these activities.
The project focuses on a specific part of the product life cycle, i.e. from installation to maintenance and after-sales technical support. Through an innovative adaptation and integration of existing products and technologies like Internet, GSM communications, multimedia and intelligent agents, ELCANO will develop a distributed system. Part of it will run at the machine tool manufacturer site, the other will run at the customer site. This should permit the creation of an effective and closer customer support relationship. The distributed control system will allow the manufacturer of machinery to provide both customers and technical support departments with a series of services that previously were either unavailable or available only at high costs and with long response times. These services will include machine monitoring, local and remote malfunction diagnosis, set-up support, repair support, and on-line technical information support.
The ELCANO concept can be exploited not only in the machine tool sector but also other sectors where highly sophisticated capital goods such as special machinery, manufacturing lines etc, come from external suppliers wishing to guarantee a high level of availability of these goods.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
