Functional Genomics on Wood Formation in Eucalyptus

Ziel

Wood represents a renewable resource for which demand continuously increases worldwide. Customised wood properties through tree domestication would release pressure from natural forests while meeting the increasing need for wood. To this end, marker-assisted breeding is a promising strategy for tree breeding.

However, to be applied effectively in tree breeding, this approach requires the identification of specific locus/loci or allelic form associated with a given phenotypic variation. Therefore, it is necessary to better understand the molecular processes underpinning the variability and plasticity of wood.

The objective of WOODGENEuS is to train a Marie Curie fellow in the most cutting-edge technologies of bioinformatics, functional genomics and genetical genomics in order to:
- Get a comprehensive picture of the genes involved in wood formation in Eucalyptus, a fast growing tree of major economic importance in Europe.
- Integrate quantitative analysis of gene expression (eQTLs) data and genetic mapping information to identify candidate genes controlling wood traits.

The overall aim of WOODGENEuS is to provide the Marie Curie fellow with an integrated training and career development programme that caters for his personal and professional development while meeting EU needs for high-level research-trained personnel.

These aims will be achieved by a multidisciplinary and intersectorial research training programme spanning bioinformatics, statistics, functional genomics and genetics and involving Eucalyptus breeders and pulp and paper companies as collaborators.

The experienced researcher will therefore be exposed to different schools of thought and will be able to combine his basic scientific training with an appreciation of potential commercial applications of his research, thus enhancing his professional maturity and perspectives.
