Final Report Summary - ELPOC (Electrical Power Control – More Electric Aircraft)

Executive Summary:
The ELPOC project investigates architecture options that can be optimised by power electronic controls and electrical system technology; it develops these technologies through sub-system and system testing prior to integration into an aircraft systems rig.
In the time frame of this programme a large (200kVA) new technology starter generator and its associated power electronics were design manufactured and tested in order to mitigate the technological risks in the way of the more electrical aircraft availability.

Project Context and Objectives:
The ELPOC project investigates architecture options that can be optimised by power electronic controls and electrical system technology; it develops these technologies through sub-system and system testing prior to integration into an aircraft systems rig.
In the time frame of this programme a large (200kVA) new technology starter generator and its associated power electronics were design manufactured and tested in order to mitigate the technological risks in the way of the more electrical aircraft availability.

Project Results:
An assessment has commenced of the potential aircraft system architectures. Variable Frequency Starter Generator (VFSG) & Engine Start Motor Control Unit (ESMCU) technology has been developed and some component / sub-system testing has been completed. After a design phase and a first set of tests, the design had to be optimized to match the technical expectations of the project. A phase of optimization was made in order to upgrade the system. Potential Impact:
Equipment was tested for demonstration of hardware using the simulated aircraft systems rig, to demonstrate the benefits of improved aircraft architecture. Due to unavailability of the rig, the performance goals This in turn will support the goal of more efficient and consequently more environmentally friendly aircraft in the future
