BUSINESS APPLICATIONS AND TOOLS FOR SMES TO COPE WITH EURO OPERATIONS (BAPTISME)

The BAPTISME results enable companies to identify the elements that can help them to be winners in a global marketplace which is already highly competitive, and where the introduction of the single currency will accelerate competitiveness, expansion and market expectations. At a business level, the economic impact depends upon a mixture of the company's behaviour (in-active, re-active, pro-active) and structural constraints (flexibility, innovation, etc.). Therefore, the most important task for SMEs is to re-focus their business strategy, using the arrival of the Euro to extend their market. Hence, individual SMEs could find themselves in a more powerful position if they reorganise specific services and use a network approach. SMEs can gain economic benefits from the legal instruments available to cope with the changeover. Since they are not often acquainted with these instruments, the only way for them to be competitive on the market is to have at their disposal information tools that help in the decision-making process. A process-based organizational and IT structure can improve a company's efficiency and effectiveness in the market and generate a benchmark framework to compare its performance with that of other market players. It transforms the corporate IT system from a passive information container into an active driver of accurate, timely process execution. With an Internet-based communication infrastructure, the system can be extended to all the partners in the supply chain, fostering the development of highly competitive networks of companies.
