Geometric algorithms for industrial application

Objectif

The area of computational geometry has developed over the last twenty years as a discipline of theoretical computer science, which drew much of its motivation from geometric applications (computer graphics, robotics, VLSI design, CAD, GIS, scientific computing). It has extracted the essential basic geometric algorithmic problems and developed efficient solutions for them. Only a few of the results had previously made their way into the application areas.

The goal of the project was to make the most important of these solutions and methods available to users in industry and academia in the form of a C++ library: CGAL (Computational Geometry Algorithms Library). The distinguishing features of CGAL are the careful and efficient treatment of robustness issues, the wide scope of the algorithms and data structures provided, and flexibility, extendibility, and ease of use.

Expected deliverables:

The deliverables of the project were to take the form of software packages to be incorporated into the library, research reports on the algorithmic and software engineering issues related to these software packages, and web pages, tutorials, and presentations about CGAL targeted for the user community. The software to be provided included a core infrastructure for constructing correct, flexible, and efficient geometric software. This was to take the form of work packages dealing with robustness issues, program checking, maintenance and evaluation, and interactive visualization. Software modules for spatial subdivisions, arrangements, Nef polyhedra, triangulations, Delaunay and Voronoi diagrams, data structures for geometric queries including secondary memory, and geometric optimisation were also to be delivered. In addition, a commercial version of the library was to be made available through Algorithmic Solution Software GmbH for purchase by industrial users.
All major deliverables outlined in the project proposal were provided. A commercialisation license contract with Algorithmic Solutions Software GmbH was signed. The library was expanded to include the above-mentioned modules as well as several others not originally planned. Technical reports and research papers were produced and presented at major conferences in the field of computational geometry as well as application areas. The library was also promoted through tutorials and presentations at these conferences. A web site (http://www.cgal.org(s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)) devoted to CGAL was established as well as a mailing list where users can discuss questions and problems with the developers of the library and other users.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
