The goal of a 70% recycling rate of C&D waste by 2020 requires increased recycling of the 3 mil-lion tons of gypsum waste produced in the EU p.a.
Where gypsum waste is recycled, available technology allows up to 90% to be returned to the C&D sector as secondary raw material, whereas the remaining fraction, composed of paper and con-taminants, is disposed of, at an economical cost to the recycling businesses and an environmental cost to all of us. R&D activities carried out by Gypsum Recycling International has demonstrated the potential to add value to the paper based waste by using it as the raw material for a new insulation product. Applying this technology, up to 99% of gypsum waste can be recycled, reducing the waste burden of C&D and eliminating the negative environmental effects of waste disposal. The resulting insulation product is superior to existing products on important parameters: it can be offered at a price 20-40% lower than existing products, it has improved environmental performance and it shows potential for improved thermal capacity.
The proposed solution changes the market conditions for recycling businesses, as it eliminates a cost and adds value to waste material, and thus substantially increases the profitability of gypsum recycling. The new business possibility provides the opportunity to extend recycling activities to new markets where recycling is currently not profitable, multiplying the economic and environ-mental impact.
The major objectives of the project are the construction of a mobile production facility and the full scale production roll out in the countries represented in the project consortium: DK, SE, NO, NL. In this way the project will reduce gypsum waste disposal, reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emissions from production of insulation and reduce the drain on virgin paper resources.
